 Biography

Ian Jones is Head of the Southern Clinical Division of the School of Medicine and Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

His responsibilities as Head of Division include academic leadership, governance, staff guidance and development and financial and infrastructure matters.

He is a graduate of the Otago Medical School in Dunedin New Zealand. He undertook postgraduate studies in Dunedin and Brisbane. He worked as a lecturer and then senior lecturer in Obstetrics & Gynaecolgy at the Royal Womens’ Hospital in Brisbane from 1975-88 and undertook private obstetric & gynaecological practice in Brisbane from 1989-90. He returned to the University of Queensland as Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology based at the Mater Mother’s Hospital, South Brisbane in 1991. He was promoted to professor in 1994 and became head of department in 1999. He teaches in all years of the MB BS Program at University of Queensland.

His areas of clinical interest are:

  • Medical education especially the graduate entry MB BS Program

  • General obstetrics & gynaecology

  • O&G services in developing countries

  • Vulvo-vaginal disorders

  • The surgical correction of vaginal agenesis

  • Cystic Fibrosis and the management of pregnancy and gynaecological conditions in these patients

Research:
  • The early prediction of Preeclampsia

  • Pelvic floor injury during childbirth

  • Obstetric performance in women with Cystic Fibrosis

Other areas of Service:
  • Chair of the Queensland Health Southern Zone Maternity, Neonatal & Gynaecological Service Advisory Committee

  • Member of the Mater Women’s Health Service Management Committee

  • Member of the Honorary Board of Consultants for Medicine Today

  • Review manuscripts for the Medical Journal of Australia and Focus on Health Professional Education

  • Grants Assessor for NHMRC, Hong Kong University, Royal Children’s Hospital Brisbane

  • Member of the Royal Women’s Hospital Credentialling & Privileges Panel

  • He has a long history of service to the Royal Australian Naval Reserve and the Australian Naval Cadet Organisation
