 Biography

Dr Ip is currently Associate Professor and Program Director of Master of Social Planning and Development and Master of Development Practice.

Dr Ip is a sociologist who was educated in Hong Kong (Chinese University of Hong Kong), the US (University of Hawaii) and Canada (University of British Columbia). He first lectured at University of Hong Kong before moving to University of Queensland in 1980. He lectures on globalisation and development, sociology of tourism, social planning, social impact assessment and project planning and appraisal. He is recipient of numerous prestigious national and international competitive research grants and fellowship including those from Toyota Foundation, Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, ARC Discovery Grant and Senior Fellowship Award from IIAS (International Institute of Asian Studies) at Leiden, the Netherlands. He has been researching in and publishing widely on Chinese ethnic business, cancer experiences of Chinese and Vietnamese communities in Australia. His most recent research is on identities and practices of transnationalism of first and second generation of Chinese transmigrants in Australia. He has also worked as a social and gender impact specialist for AusAID, United Nations Development Program, the Queensland Government and private consultancy firms appraising various development projects in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan.
