Michael is a staff specialist with Genetic Health Queensland, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine, and currently researching the clinical aspects of the oculoauriculovertebral spectrum for the award Master of Philosophy. Michael studied medicine at UQ, graduating MBBS in 1997. He went on to train as a paediatrician at the Mater Children's Hospital (Brisbane) and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2005. Michael had a long-standing interest in the genetic basis of disease and subsequently trained in clinical genetics at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children's Hospital, and The Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane. In 2006 Michael qualified as a clinical geneticist under the auspices of the RACP and the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA).
Michael currently works as a staff specialist with Genetic Health Queensland. He has a special interest in prenatal genetics and diagnostic dysmorphology.
In 2006 Michael was awarded a Masters degree in Clinical Epidemiology by the University of Newcastle. Currently he is enrolled as a part-time candidate for a Master of Philosophy degree in UQ's School of Medicine. The topic of his Master's thesis is "Clinical Characterisation of the Oculoauriculovertebral Spectrum (OAVS)". This project aims to better understand the epidemiology and clinical aspects of OAVS and Goldenhar syndrome.
