Associate Professor Farah's main research interest is head and neck cancer. Associate Professor Farah graduated with a BDSc from the University of Western Australia, and a PhD in Oral Pathology & Immunology, and subsequently an MDSc in Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology from the University of Queensland.
He is a registered specialist in Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology, and maintains a specialist private practice. He is also a Consultant Oral Pathologist to Qscan Radiology Clinics. He holds a teaching and research appointment as Reader in the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland, and is the Deputy Head of School. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.
Associate Professor Farah is an inaugural Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the special stream of Oral Medicine, a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the Pierrie Fauchard Academy. He is also the Inaugural President of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia, the Vice President of the Australasian Immunohistochemistry Society, and Vice President of the ANZ Division of the International Association for Dental Research. He has held a UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, an NHMRC Research Fellowship, and was Visiting Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London in 2004. He has previously served as Vice President of the Oral Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand, Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Association of Oral Pathologists 2006.
Associate Professor Farah has published widely in peer reviewed journals, has co-authored 5 book chapters, and has presented many continuing education courses nationally and internationally. His clinical interests lie in oral mucosal disease, salivary gland dysfunction, and oro-facial pain. He has a keen interest in new diagnostic techniques employed in head and neck cancer detection and screening, and is conducting clinical and molecular research in this area funded by the NHMRC, Cancer Australia, ADRF, and RBWH Foundation. Associate Professor Farah is interested in virtual microscopy and digital radiology, and has undertaken research in these areas funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council.
