 Biography

Lionel Chan is a medical doctor in a postgraduate research programme. His primary research interests are emerging cardiovascular risk factors and their interaction with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in high risk populations.

Lionel Chan graduated from University College Dublin, National University of Ireland with his MB BCh BAO (Hons) degrees in 2001. Since graduation, he completed his PGY1 training in Singapore before undertaking a PhD degree at The University of Queensland. He is involved in research investigating efficacy of a lifestyle intervention to sustainably improve markers of health outcome in Indigenous Australians. Research activities include evaluating markers of cardiovascular risk such as central obesity, C-reactive protein, carotid artery intimal medial thickness and brachial artery reactivity. Recent collaborative research efforts included examination of the contribution of common C-reactive protein gene mutations to circulating C-reactive protein levels and utility of adipokine profiling in determining risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Within the School of Medicine, he is a tutor for students in the MBBS programme.
