 Biography

Professor of Political Science and Director of the University of Queensland Social Research Centre.

Background:
Professor Boreham obtained his PhD in 1985 and was appointed Head of Department in 1995 and subsequently Head of School on its foundation in 2000; He has held visiting appointments at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Public Sector Economics Research Centre at the University of Leicester, the Organisation & Employment Studies Group at the University of Manchester; the Dept of Sociology at Carleton University, Ottawa; the Department of Politics at the University of York and the Centre for European Employment Research at the University of Strathclyde.
Research Interests:

  • Work Organization and Technological Innovation. This research is concerned with the impact on work and organization as new information and communication technologies encourage an increased flexibility of time and place. Key aspects of these studies include the effect of new technologies on organizational capacity for innovation and development, industrial relations and employment impacts and the implications of global systems of production and employment.

  • Employment and Labour Market Conditions in Australia. This research involves quantitative analysis of changes in employment practices, in working arrangements, and in the growth of flexible labour market practices flowing from deregulation and decentralisation of industrial relations.

  • Labour Movements, Industrial Relations and Economic Policy Institutions and Social and Economic Outcomes in Comparative Perspective. This research focuses on the way in which macro-economic outcomes such as unemployment and economic inequality are influenced in the major advanced economies by the structure and organizational dynamics of economic and industrial relations institutions in which organized labour movements are accorded a legitimate policy role.

  • Political Economy and Public Policy. Comparative national studies of state regulatory frameworks and policies and their implications for the achievement of desirable social, political and economic outcomes. Particular areas of focus include regional development and employment policies, innovation, industry policy and labour market policies.
