 Research Interests

1995 - 2008     Sustainability of Agricultural Production Systems
Interest is in sustaining agricultural production systems through efficient and effective use of agricultural inputs and resource management practices to produce food and fibre in an environmentally responsible manner, so that resource quality is maintained while producing quality agricultural outputs. The beneficial and safe use of resources recovered form other human activities eg water, indudtrial waste or by products and long term maintenance or improvement in soil carbon concentration are important components of this interest. Further, the capacity of agriculture generally and production practices for individual crops/enterprises crops to adapt in response to climate change is integral to this interest. Agricultural sustainability is considered to be both a subset and contributor to wider concepts of landscape sustainability and community sustainability.
Keywords:  sustainable agriculture, agricultural sustainability, landscape sustainability, community sustainability, climate change, land management

1998 - 2008     Functional structural modelling of plants
The understanding of organogenesis in plants, the relationship of organogenesis to environmental variable, implications for organ and whole plant structure and functioning in optimum and suboptimum environments, with specific emphasis on water stress
Keywords:  functional structural modelling, plant architecture, organogenesis, phenology

1997 - 2008     Beneficial use of recovered resources and waste materials
The use as resources of waste products from primary and secondary industries in agricultural systems in a safe, sustainable and environmentally sound manner.
Keywords:  waste management, resource recovery, sustainable agriculture, environmental management

1988 - 2008     Crop modelling for simulation and decision support
The use of computer modelling for simulation of crop yield, scenario analyses and decision support. The research interest includes investigations of algorithms that describe plant growth and development processes in a biologically valid manner, and the application of models to assess research opportunities and in support of decisions on cropping and agronomic practice options.
Keywords:  modelling, simulation, simulation modelling, decision support, scenario analyses, agricultural systems

1974 - 2008     Plant Nutrition, Fertiliser and Soil Management
Fundamental and aspects of plant nutrition and fertiliser management, principally in cropping systems, with emphasis on efficient use of fertiliser inputs
Keywords:  plant nutrition, fertiliser use, fertiliser management
