 Biography

My research interests include all aspects of coordination chemistry; particularly its relevance to the areas of electrochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, spectroscopy and catalysis.

In recent years some of the areas in which we have been, and continue to be, actively involved include:

  • Design and synthesis of electrochromic devices (changing colour upon oxidation/reduction) based on molecular cyano-bridged di- and trimetallic mixed valence complexes (collaboration with Dr M. Martinez, Uni. of Barcelona).

  • Electrochemistry of the dimethyl sulfoxide reductase family of enzymes (collaboration with Dr A.G. McEwan, Microbiology & Parasitology, UQ).

  • Orally effective chelators for the treatment of iron overload diseases (collaboration with Dr D.R. Richardson, Heart Research Institute, Sydney).

  • Electron and energy transfer in transition metal and lanthanide complexes (collaboration with Dr M.J. Riley, Chemistry, UQ).

  • Electroactive sensors for small molecules and ions.

    All of these projects involve an understanding at the molecular level of the role of the metal ion as
    (i) an electron transfer relay;
    (ii) a target for a metal-specific ligand; or
    (iii) a spectroscopic signal of its ligand environment.
