 Biography

Dr Michael Barr’s research interests include: ethnicity, nation building, politics, education, development, religion, cultural politics in Southeast Asia; Singapore politics, society and history; history and power of ideas and religions.

Dr Barr holds a BA Hons and PhD from UQ and is an ARC Postdoctoral Research Fellow in History.

His teaching interests include: History of South East Asia; contemporary Southeast Asia; Genocide studies; international relations of Southeast Asia; religion and culture in Southest Asia.

Dr Barr’s current research projects include:

  • Nation Building and Elite Formation in Singapore, a 3 year project funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant and Postdoctoral Research Fellowship finishiing in 2006. Collaborating with Dr Zlatko Skrbis of the University of Queensland School of Social Science.
  • Paths Not Taken: The False Spring of Political Pluralism in Postwar Singapore, a 3 year multi-institutional project funded by Australian Research Council over 2003–2005. Particular responsibilities include editorial and coordination duties, and research on politico-religious forces.


He is also a member of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, and the Australian Institute of International Affairs.
