 Biography

Dr Stephen Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Physiology, in the Schools of Animal Studies and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr Anderson's research areas are Molecular Endocrinology of Prolactin and Growth Hormone

The pituitary hormone prolactin is essential for reproduction in all mammals. Prolactin stimulates its target cells by binding two prolactin-receptor molecules, which then activate several independent signalling cascades. In most target cells, the prolactin-receptor signals through the JAK2/STAT5 pathway to induce transcription. The recently discovered SOCS family proteins inhibit this pathway and so cause cellular resistance to prolactin.

Our interest is in the expression and roles of SOCS proteins in three prolactin targets:

  • Breast Cancer
  • The Corpus Luteum
  • Neuroendocrine cells of the Hypothalamus

Please see Research Interests (left menu) for further details on these areas.
