 Biography

Rangeland management; grazing management; arid land management.

What I do
I teach ecology, rangeland ecology and rangeland management. This covers principles of basic ecology and applied ecology which is specific to rangelands (i.e. native vegetation which is grazed by livestock and/or wildlife). The rangeland management teaching involves practical issues of grazing and fire as well as land administration and related issues. Students of basic ecology are from a wide range of Programs. Rangeland Ecology and Rangeland Management involve students interested in monitoring and management of rangeland for livestock as well as for wildlife management. A highlight of the teaching is the annual field study trip to western Qld with the students. My areas of research in rangeland management include grazing management (particularly grazing management systems) and woody shrub control. Strong links have been developed with primary producers as well as CSIRO, state government departments and overseas colleagues.

Background
I have been teaching in a wide range of subjects at The University of Queensland Gatton since 1989. Prior to that I spent 20 years working in rangelands in NSW with the Soil Conservation Service and Western Lands Commission. This involved a brief period of research in the Snowy Mountains, with the remainder of the time in the rangeland and dryland cropping areas of western NSW. The latter included mainly research and advisory work as well as aspects of land administration and politics. Since leaving NSW I have also been involved in a wide range of consultancy work.
