The Advanced Computational Modelling Centre manages a state-of-the-art Visualisation and Advanced Computation Laboratory (ViSAC). It is also an extensive user of the UQ's 20-node supercomputer. The visualisation group within the ACMC was set up through a mix of university and APAC (Australian partnership for advanced computing) funding. There are approximately 10 staff members working in areas such as modelling, graphics, programming, system administration and general administration.
The infrastructure money came through QPSF (Queensland Parallel Supercomputing Foundation) from the Queensland state government this was $2M to set up the virtual reality centre VISAC (Visualisation and Advanced Computing) and is part of $10M available for advanced computing infrastructure.
Our role is to form partnerships with other groups that need sophisticated visualisation tools and to give training and develop educational material. We undertake a variety of projects from pure research to collaborative commercial and noncommercial applications.
