| 2007 - 2011 | Language 'Revival' in the Middle East: The Genesis of Israeli ('Modern Hebrew') |
| Abstract: | This project will develop a new analysis of the Israeli language (aka 'Modern Hebrew'), based on the hypothesis that Israeli is a Semito-European hybrid. Its innovative approach to language genesis and contact linguistics will explore the social and educational practices generated by the myth of Hebrew, as well as the nature of the modern language. The study of Israeli, semi-engineered and politically loaded, affords insights into the dynamics between language and culture, and into the role of language as a source of collective self-perception. Based on empirical data collection, the project will seek to replace misconceptions about Israeli with a model which is clearer, yet also more complex.
