Students going on exchange are covered by The University of Queensland’s Corporate Travel Insurance for the first semester of their exchange plus five personal days of travel. The items covered by this insurance include medical expenses overseas, medical evacuation, luggage, personal effects, credit cards and specific items (eg, laptop computer). If you are planning to travel either before or after your exchange period or you are going on exchange for two semesters, you will need to take out additional insurance to cover these periods. You find out more about buying extra insurance using the link above or by talking to your travel agent.
Please note: Students returning to their home country are not covered for overseas medical expenses and overseas medical evacuation expenses.
Mandatory Host University Health insurance:
Many exchange partners require students to purchase health insurance package to meet student visa requirements. This means that, although you will be covered by the UQ insurance for the first semester of your exchange, you may have to purchase the health insurance provided by your host university. Partners from the following countries have indicated that exchange students will not be required to purchase insurance additional to the UQ insurance: Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, The Netherlands, NZ, Sweden, The UK, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand.
However, you may be required to present proof of what is covered in the UQ policy in order to be exempt from purchasing your host university’s insurance policy. Please contact the UQ Abroad office if you require further information about UQ’s corporate Travel and Health Insurance policy.
International students:
If you are an international student studying at UQ, you are entitled to apply for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) credit for any period you are out of Australia for longer than one month. This includes the period you are studying outside of Australia on exchange. To apply for OSHC credit, you will need to provide a copy of your passport Photo ID page and Immigration Australia stamps for Departure and Arrival to the OSHC Representative at the St Lucia Student Centre within 28 days of returning to Australia. A refund for the unused portion of the OSHC can be obtained from Worldcare at the end of your degree program.
