Program at UQ: Bachelor of Science

A lot of people ask me why I chose to go to India on exchange, and they’re right to ask. Even the Indians themselves are perplexed at my decision as thousands of their students flock to study in Australia. But I went there to experience something totally different, and that’s exactly what I got.

The differences between India and Australia  are too numerous to list here, but they add up to a rich experience full of twists and turns, ups and downs that you will never forget for the rest of your life. It is an experience that makes you really appreciate how easy life is here in Australia.

You should go to India with a lot of patience and an open mind, and if you don’t have these, you will eventually acquire them like I did. Delays aren’t questioned, privacy not observed and an interest in cricket expected.

In terms of education, I found it almost a complete reversal from the system here at UQ. You should perhaps not expect it to build upon your degree, but rather, envisage it as part of the experience.

It is an intense experience travelling through India – a constant assault on the senses. You see the extremes of poverty and feel helpless in doing anything about it, yet filthy rich idle by. There is so much history and culture, that even after doing a whole subject in it, I am still bewildered by its sheer enormity.

Although it was a welcome relief to step back onto Australian soil, I find myself missing India more and more. The experiences and sights are unique, and others certainly much more affordable than anywhere else making for an unforgettable trip. I formed deep bonds with the friends I made there, some complete strangers, and I wonder if I will ever meet them again in that chaotic labyrinth that is India.
