UQ Program: Bachelor of Arts
I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts, 3rd year, and decided to go to Mexico City on exchange to experience some change in my degree. I have been to Mexico a couple of times before, but living in a country is completely different than visiting it. You get to see more and understand the locals more, especially if you speak Spanish and give an effort to integrate yourself.
I chose to take 4 courses at the Tec de Monterrey as you do not have to enrol in the full 6-8 subjects as the local students do, and therefore I had more time to experience Mexico. The teachers who teach exchange students and “exchange” subjects, which are basically subjects in English for incoming exchange students, are very lenient with their study plan as they know we enjoy travelling a lot. At the end of the semester I wanted to keep my student ID card as a souvenir but wasn’t allowed to out of security reasons as the Tec has high security measures.
The Tec organised some group outings in the first week, but after that we had to organise ourselves which turned out to work really well .The majority of incoming exchange students were from Eastern Europe, but there were many other nationalities in the exchange group. We spent weekends going places, either by bus, car, or plane depending on the distance. This allowed us to see so much more of the country, but we had to watch our attendance as we could not miss more than 2 weeks throughout the whole semester.
I spent some of the greatest 6 months of my life in Mexico and I’m sure I will be going back in the future again, maybe even for longer. I highly recommend going to Mexico City on exchange because most people are afraid of the place and decide to go to other parts of Mexico, but it’s really not as bad as the outside world portrays and it’s an amazing place to be once you’re there and make your own opinion.
