UQ Program: Bachelor of Science/Education
My name is Matthew Spann, I am a third year Science/Education student at UQ who went on exchange to the University of California, Davis for six months. As soon as I arrived, I immediately made lots of friends with other students on my dormitory floor. Luckily, my roommate and I got along really well. I took all Math classes for both quarters which were pretty tough. I’m so glad that I only had to pass – which I did. Sporting events were always entertaining to play and watch. Going to frat parties was like walking into a teen movie!
Getting up to crazy adventures on the weekends was awesome. San Francisco was only a 2hr drive away and no doubt my favourite destination in the US was Yosemite National Park. There was a lot more to do on campus at UCD compared to UQ. There was always something going on at UCD be it festivals, movie screenings, dodgeball tournaments or the legendary American college parties.
Going to Seattle, Vancouver and Cancun for spring break was an amazing adventure. I enjoyed the spring quarter more than the winter quarter as I had settled in and knew how things worked around UC Davis. It was tough making such good friends – and then leaving forever. After leaving UC Davis I travelled around the USA and Canada for 6 weeks! So yeah, I have had the time of my life these last seven months and would definitely advocate taking a semester abroad to all students.
