Kawthar Girach: National University of Singapore (Semester 1, 2010)

UQ Program: Bachelor of Arts/Law

To sum up my semester of exchange to Singapore in one word, I would say “opportunity”.  To be able to step out of my comfort zone and experience limitless opportunities, from education at NUS to travelling around the region to the day-to-day experience of living independently in such a bustling, vibrant city, exchange is definitely an experience I will never forget.

At first the thought of having 3 hour long seminars at the NUS Law School were a bit daunting, however I did really come to enjoy NUS Law School.  Located in the backdrop of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, consisting of colonial-style white buildings with the most modern technology and facilities, it was a great place to study.  Classes were also very small and very much discussion-based, allowing more one-to-one interaction with Professors and greater opportunities to exchange views of the state of the law.  The opportunity to undertake subjects not offered at UQ and to be confronted with perspectives that are very different to that at home in Australia were also invaluable to broaden my understanding of the law in practice in different places.

The opportunity to travel around the region was amazing, from trekking through the jungles of Borneo to swimming in crystal clear waters of islands in Malaysia to the picturesque mosques of Brunei encased in glittering gold, the experiences were simply unforgettable.

Singapore is a great city for ease of transportation, amazingly cheap food, and pluralistic inclusion and celebration of different cultures.  My only advice is don’t waste a moment of your exchange, get into it, make memories that will last a lifetime!
