Jenna Thompson: University of Copenhagen (Semester 1, 2010)

UQ Program: Bachelor Sciences (Mathematics)

I arrived in Copenhagen to the coldest and most amazing winter Europe has had for the last 40 years and it was definitely a shock to the system.  As I stepped off the plane in my jeans and t-shirt I was definitely not prepared for the hectic snow storms and icy streets which lay ahead.  As I settled into the wonderful Copenhagen life, I noticed three main things about the city:

1. The 7 Elevens here are amazing (such good food)
2.  I have never been so cold in my life
3.  There are SO many Australians here

Whilst at the University of Copenhagen I studied subjects such as Danish culture, Danish Language and History of Maths.   Not only were the subjects quite different from my usual Mathematics degree, but I found that the university itself differed greatly from UQ.   Classes were spread out between different campuses around the city, but luckily Copenhagen is quite small so it was very easy to ride my bike or catch public transport between breaks.   I found the classes much more relaxed than at UQ and I would definitely recommend the Danish Language and Danish Culture course as it is a great way to meet people and you get to go on heaps of excursions.

I know everyone says this, but it’s true:  Going on exchange was one of the best things I have ever done.  I have met so many people from around the world and made friendships I know will last for a very long time!  I have learnt to step out of my comfort zone and be more independent.

Copenhagen is an amazing and beautiful place, however you can’t prepare yourself for how extremely cold it will be, so make sure you have a super thick coat and stack on as many LAYERS as you can!!!!
