James Mulligan: University of Sheffield (Semester 2 / 2009)

Program at UQ: Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning

Even though the loads of paper work and running around may be annoying and discouraging, it's all worth it! I had the best five months of my life on exchange at the University of Sheffield.

The university itself is spread throughout the city with a central hub located around the Students Union building. The union itself is great in terms of academic and support services but most importantly it hosts a different club night each and every night of the year. Sheffield is a real student city and you'll never have nothing to do, with most places offering student discounts. The city itself is reasonably cheap with a reasonable variety of shops with good public transport servicing the city. The beautiful Peak District is only a short bus ride away for spectacular hikes or something more extreme such as exploring the underworld with the caving club. There are so many clubs and societies you'll find what you're looking for.

I'm third from the left - good view, food and friends in the Peak District

I highly recommend that you live in university-owned accommodation as it is the easiest way to meet and make life long friends with other international exchange students. By the end of things you'll be speaking a little bit of every language on earth and have places to stay all around the world. My programme was run very well with smaller class sizes so you really can interact with your lecturer and peers. You'll likely be on a first name basis with the teaching and support staff by the end of semester. The workload is very reasonable so you'll have ample time to travel during the weekends or the holidays throughout the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe.

My time on exchange got rid of some bad habits, gave me many great memories, changed my perspective on almost everything and allowed me to grow as a person. I know that sounds cliche but it's true. I highly recommend going on exchange to the University of Sheffield as it will be one of the best experiences of your life.
