UQ Program: Bachelors of Arts/Business Management
At the Copenhagen Business School I studied four subjects all concerning International Business. Unlike UQ, CBS held only lectures. It was expected that students be thoroughly prepared for each lecture by reading all of the set materials, which were in some instances very prolific. The Danish students were always far more prepared than any of the Internationals!
A few of the best things about CBS were proximity to the Metro, the amazing modern buildings and a very high quality of cafeteria food.
One of the strangest things was the format of the exams. All four of my exams were four hour PC based open-book exams. The only thing is, students had to provide their own computers as well as printers! I felt seriously peculiar walking through the snow and on the Metro carrying my laptop and giant printer.
Living in Copenhagen is a great base from which to travel to other countries. The city of Malmo in Sweden is only a 30min train ride from Copenhagen’s central station and Oslo (Norway) is an overnight ferry away. CBS organizes a few trips for International students including a weekend trip to Berlin, which I participated in.
I had the privilege of living in a Danish residence hall so I was able to experience true Danish student life. I even had a Danish Christmas lunch which included pickled herring, meatballs, rye bread and of course, lots of schnapps!
Copenhagen is not a cheap place to live but it has so much more to offer beyond what money can buy. The Danish students all whinge about having no money, yet they are all paid to be at University and many also have jobs! The one thing I can say for sure about expenses is that you will undoubtedly need far more than you estimate.
It is with mixed emotions that I leave my exchange behind me. I had a hefty adjustment period where I was terribly home sick but this certainly lessened with time, new friendships and a growing sense of independence. I am sad to leave behind friends that I have made, as well as my residence which became my home that was always welcoming after weekend trips in dirty hostels!
