Frank Tigani: Bocconi University (Semester 1, 2011)

UQ Program: Bachelors of Arts

I would recommend to anyone to undertake an exchange. The opportunity to live and study in a foreign country is truly a unique experience and one that most will never have the opportunity to do. I spent one semester at the prestigious and widely renowned Bocconi University in Milan and it proved to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

I found the courses offered relatively enjoyable and not too demanding. This enabled me to travel extensively throughout the semester and not just in Italy but around Europe and Milan is a great city to travel from thanks to its geographic position and the three nearby airports.

Milan itself is a very liveable city for students and young adults alike with a great nightlife, ongoing events (mainly fashion related) and, of course, great food to enjoy. For those who appreciate football, it is a dream. Two of biggest clubs in the country and, indeed, the world both come from Milan. Even for those not keen on football, it is advisable to pick a team to support and go see them play at the San Siro (Milan’s football stadium) as it is truly a key part of the local culture and a great experience too.

One thing I would strongly advise for those considering studying in Milan is to find your own accommodation. The general residence is not ideal if you want to really soak up the experience of living in Italy and especially if you intend on picking up the local tongue. Also, be sure to undertake the intensive Italian course before the start of the semester, Italians do not speak good English so you will need to have some understanding of the language.
