Dhwani Patel: University of Washington (Semester 2 / 2009)

Program at UQ: Bachelor of Biotechnology - UQ News : Biotechnology learning goes global

I think I wanted to go for an exchange program in the 1st semester I began studying at UQ! Selecting a university was a bit of a tough choice because UQ had so many choices to offer. For me, to choose USA as a destination was easy because I intended to look into doing my Master’s degree from there.

Being an international student already studying in Australia, I did assume to a certain extent that the experience wouldn’t be as different for me as it would be for others. But this proved to be quite wrong!

The University of Washington is recognized for its current research and excellent science faculties and this is one of the reasons that led me to choose UW (or U-DUB as people call it here) because my major is Microbial Biotechnology. There are two particular things that I will never forget about this university:
·         The team spirit that the entire university participates in to support the home football team the Huskies. When you enter the campus, it is impossible not to be hit by a wave of purple and gold, the team colors. The spirit is so strong that you can’t help but be a part of the Husky-mania yourself and I am proud to say I am quite a “Husky” myself now!
·         As you enter campus, and face the Drumheller fountain, you get an unobstructed view of Mt. Rainier, larger than life, in the background! There is actually a law that says that no building can be constructed high enough to obstruct this view! Seeing this every morning before class just made my day.

It is difficult to sum up the enormity of the experience I’ve had on the exchange. But yes, signing up for an exchange definitely means opening up doors to meet people from all over the world, exploring new places and learning many things about a culture that is so different from yours. I must mention that if you do choose America, keep in mind that one quarter is definitely not enough to experience everything to your satisfaction!
