UQ Program: Bachelor of Biotechnology
I studied at the University of Washington for the Winter Quarter of 2010 (our first semester). I chose to go on exchange as there was an $8,000 biotechnology fellowship available to study at UW (U-Dub), which I was lucky enough to receive. Apply for any scholarships/fellowships which even remotely relate to you – never assume that everyone else will apply and be more qualified
Going on exchange to a university on the quarter system means that in 3 months you complete the equivalent 6 month semester of UQ. This allows for 3 months of travel, or in my case, volunteer lab work, before the next semester begins.
Dorm living is a fantastic experience and a cost effective way to live. It often includes food and accommodation. I actually found dorm food to be really delicious, keep a look out for special food served on holidays (e.g. Martin Luther King Junior Day). Single rooms can be very lonely, doubles an interesting challenge. My roommate and I are now great friends and I can’t wait for the opportunity to visit her again.
Some places serve bottomless drinks and chips (fries) – so order one meal between two. Clothes, makeup and electronics are much cheaper in the US. So plan to buy some things there. Flying to and from America, most airlines allow TWO 20kg suitcases. I personally came away with a lot of presents and bargains. Starbucks is actually good in the US. The best Starbucks is the original, at Pike Place Markets in Seattle. Go to a university sporting event! The school spirit and atmosphere is incredible.
Go on exchange as early as possible in your degree. This allows for more flexibility with courses (such as doing a third year course in second year) so that you can complete all your compulsory courses and get credit whilst on exchange. Going on exchange can open up so many opportunities, both whilst overseas and when you’ve arrived home. Just go for it!
