Alicia Ducat: University of Edinburgh (Semesters 2, 2009 and 1, 2010)

UQ Program: Bachelor of Arts

I decided to spend a year studying in Edinburgh on somewhat of a whim two years into my arts degree. Luckily this turned out to be probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Majoring in Art History and English literature, Edinburgh offered the perfect opportunity academically to add depth to my degree.  Studying Scottish Art, Scottish literature, and Celtic Culture at one of the oldest universities in the United Kingdom gave my study a unique focus that would have been impossible to gain without studying abroad.

I very quickly fell in love with the city of Edinburgh itself which in my opinion is extremely underrated. It seems to facilitate a very interesting clash of cultures through its convoluted history and its position as a modern international political and cultural capital. Its mix of Medieval, Georgian and modern architecture give the city a unique aesthetic and certain charm. On top of this Edinburgh is quite a student friendly city and a very fun city to live in as an exchange student.  If you are culturally inclined the Edinburgh Festival seems to linger around the city all year round, if not, the city has a lively pub culture with pub crawls a staple of University of Edinburgh social life.

I left home expecting amazing experiences but it was the mundane, but no less profound, experiences that are most memorable.  Little things like walking through the snow; my favourite places to eat; going to the beach because it was 16oC and the hottest day all year ; sitting in café’s for hours, and just generally spending time with friends that I really miss. This experience helped me to grow up a lot and it greatly changed my conception of the world which is now, I hope, much more complete.
