ABOUT Aalto!

At Aalto University we believe that the future of education exists at the crossroads of science, technology, business and art. The university attracts and engages the best students through inspiring curricula that address societal challenges and offer multidisciplinary opportunities and consistently high quality learning experiences.

The university emphasizes importance of multidisciplinary teaching and learning and therefore has introduced Aalto Cross-School Courses and University Wide Art Studies (UWAS). UWAS offer access to design thinking for every discipline in the university through a series of field neutral courses on creativity and culture. The School of Business has introduced courses like Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, Design and Creativity in Business, and Business and Society (by our ex-Prime Minister Esko Aho) among others which are open to all students. The multidisciplinary spaces, the Aalto Design Factory and the Aalto Startup Sauna, are also located in the Otaniemi campus.

Exchange students coming for the autumn semester to Helsinki would have an opportunity to volunteer at the SLUSH. It is an annual fair, where startups and technology talent meet with international investors. SLUSH started in 2009 as Aalto students’ initiative with 300 participants. 2016 SLUSH brought together over 15.000 attendees, 1700 startups, 4 stages, 200 speakers and more than 3.500 companies for the 2-day event. There were 1500 student volunteers working to make it happen. It could be an excellent opportunity to an exchange student to learn more about it by volunteering. Due to the high demand we have guaranteed a quota for the incoming exchange students. In return students get a certificate that they have worked at SLUSH. SLUSH Japan was held in May 2016 in Tokyo and SLUSH Shanghai will be held in October 2016.

The School of Business operates in the Helsinki area on two campuses. The undergraduate program is offered in the Otaniemi Campus in Espoo (main campus of Aalto University, 9 km from downtown Helsinki) and the graduate level programs in the downtown Töölö Campus. The multidisciplinary spaces, the Aalto Design Factory, open environment for the research and education on product development and the Aalto Startup Sauna are also located in the Otaniemi campus.
