Tuition fees to host institution: As an exchange student, you pay no tuition fees to your host university.  However, some host institutions have a mandatory fee for Student Services and/or public transportation concessions. Tuition fees to UQ: As an exchange student, you remain liable for tuition fees or student contributions (HECS) at UQ depending on your citizenship status (see below).  You will be charged 8 units (a standard full-time load) for each semester on exchange, regardless of the number of units granted towards your University of Queensland degree for the courses undertaken at the Host University while on exchange. 

Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents with a Humanitarian visa will continue as Commonwealth Supported students and will have their student contribution (HECS) calculated at the Band 1 (Arts) rate.

International students on will be charged 8 units at the Band A international student tuition fee rate.

Australian permanent residents without a Humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens on exchange will be required to pay full tuition fees up-front, at the Band 1 domestic student tuition fee rate for 8 units.  The Federal Government has advised that permanent residents without a Humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens undertaking exchange studies overseas cannot be Commonwealth Supported, as studying outside Australia does not meet the Government's residency requirements.
