$70 million to UQ
The Australian Government late last week announced funds totalling almost $70m to UQ:
- $47.2 million towards the completion of new UQ School of Veterinary Science facilities at UQ Gatton (the total project is worth more than $100 million)
- $22.7 million to create or renew teaching and learning infrastructure.

Senior Executive title changes 2009
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield, has approved the following title changes with effect from January 1, 2009:
- Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) to now become Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) [rather than (Education)];
- Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) to become Pro-Vice-Chancellor;
- Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) to become Associate Dean (Academic).
New Faculty Executive Dean
The Vice-Chancellor also announces the appointment of Professor Tim Brailsford as Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law from January 1. Professor Brailsford joined UQ in mid-2002 as the Foundation Head of the then newly-formed UQ Business School and is now in his second term as Head of School. Prior to joining UQ, he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at Australian National University.
Professor Brailsford replaces Professor Ian Zimmer, who steps down on December 31, 2008 after 10 years in the Executive Dean role. Professor Zimmer will act as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) for six months from January 1.
$2.3 million to expand language learning

Traffic changes from January 5, 2009
The right turn lanes from Hale Street to Coronation Drive (proceeding towards the St Lucia campus) will be temporarily closed until completion of the Hale Street Link in mid 2010. Traffic currently using Hale Street and the right turn to Coronation Drive should seek alternative routes during this closure period. Details: online.
Vice-Chancellor’s address to all staff available online
Staff who were unable to attend an open address by Professor Paul Greenfield on December 2, can view a PowerPoint presentation of the event at: www.uq.edu.au/about/vice-chancellor-staff-address. The site also links to the staff engagement survey, the UQ school-based performance Framework Report and the School performance charts, and the Insight project. A UQ username and password is required to access these sites and files.
UQ Options Evening
Staff members with prospective tertiary students in their families are reminded the UQ Options Evening will be held between 4.30pm and 7pm on Monday, December 22, in the UQ Centre, St Lucia campus.

ARC appointments
The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, has approved the appointments of UQ staff members Professor Bernie Degnan, Professor Martin Bell and Professor Jennifer Martin as members of the Australian Research Council College of Experts for three years from January 1, 2009.
Teaching award to UQ staffer
Dr Lydia Kavanagh of the School of Engineering was recognised last week in the Australasian Association for Engineering Education Awards with a Highly Commended in the Teaching Excellence category. Dr Kavanagh also recently won a 2008 UQ award for excellence in teaching.
Changes to intercampus bus timetable
The Intercampus bus schedules have been updated on the P&F website, now with separate timetables — including one for the 2008 vacation period and one for the 2009 vacation period.

Housekeeping matters
Update emergency contact details through ESS
For effective management in an emergency crisis situation, staff are asked to keep their contact details up-to-date. Staff who have not already updated their current phone numbers including mobiles, where available, and next-of-kin details, are requested to do so by Wednesday, December 24, 2008.
Overseas travel reporting reminder
The University is required by law to submit to State Parliament, as part of the Annual Report template on the UQ website. It is important that all details are completed on the template, including title and office, and that there is a brief explanation of the purpose of the visit. Please check that amounts and countries are correct before submitting your report.
Final 2008 Update
This week’s UQ Update will be the final issue for 2008. The newsletter will resume weekly publication from Monday, January 19, 2009. Plans are underway for a survey on the newsletter, now in its seventh year, to guide future forms and directions. Contributions for each weekly issue will continue to be due by the preceding Friday morning. Have a safe and happy festive season.
