Vice-Chancellor’s address to all staff available online
Staff who were unable to attend an open address by UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield on December 2, can view a PowerPoint presentation of the event at: www.uq.edu.au/about/vice-chancellor-staff-address. The site also links to the staff engagement survey, the UQ school-based performance Framework Report and the School performance charts, and the Insight project. A UQ username and password is required to access these sites and files.
Executive appointments from January 1, 2009
Professor Greenfield has announced the following executive appointments:
- Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Relations): Professor Ian Zimmer will act in this position for six months from January 1 to June 30, 2009 while the recruitment process for the Pro-Vice-Chancellor is completed. Professor Zimmer completes 10 years as the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law on December 31, 2008.
- Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology: Professor Graham Schaffer has been appointed to this role. Professor Schaffer was appointed Head of the School of Engineering from July 2007 and Deputy Executive Dean of the Faculty of EPSA from August 2008.

UQ graduation ceremonies online with live streaming
This service is offered to allow friends and family of graduating students to view graduation proceedings live from any internet-connected computer around the world.
Go to the following link http://mcu.cc.uq.edu.au/conference.html?name=GRADSTREAM and when prompted type in the word guest in the user name field and click OK. There is no need to enter a password. Once you have entered the site, click on the eye icon in the top right-hand corner and you will be asked to select your streaming settings, following which the video stream will be played live. UQ Options Evening

Student email for life
UQ students will soon have an improved email system called UQconnect Email+ for Life. It offers a number of benefits, including a user-friendly, name-based email address, increased mail quota, and the ability to send large attachments. The new service is being piloted over Summer Semester, with a view to moving all student accounts in early 2009. You can still contact students using the existing address format (s123456@student.uq.edu.au) as this mail is forwarded automatically to the new service. Changes to intercampus bus timetable
The Intercampus bus schedules have been updated on the P&F website, now with separate timetables — including one for the 2008 vacation period and one for the 2009 vacation period.

Housekeeping matters
Finalise accounts ahead of UniFi
With the impending implementation of UniFi, the new financial system, it’s imperative that all outstanding accounts payable items be finalised before year’s end. These include: general claims for staff reimbursements, travel reimbursement, phone reimbursements, mileage claims and any other types of claims or reimbursements, and outstanding purchasing and executive card reconciliations. The payment of claims need to be lodged with Accounts Payable Section by Friday, December 12, and reconciliations by Monday, December 15.
Update emergency contact details through ESS
For effective management in an emergency crisis situation, staff are asked to keep their contact details up-to-date. Staff who have not already updated their current phone numbers including mobiles, where available, and next-of-kin details, are requested do so by Wednesday, December 24, 2008.
Overseas travel reporting reminder
The University is required by law to submit to State Parliament, as part of the Annual Reporttemplate on the UQ website. It is important that all details are completed on the template, including title and office, and that there is a brief explanation of the purpose of the visit. Please check that amounts and countries are correct before submitting your report.
Final UQ Update for 2008 fast approaching
Next week’s UQ Update of December 15 (copy deadline this Friday, December 12) will be the final issue for 2008. The newsletter will resume weekly publication from Monday, January 19, 2009. Plans are underway for a survey on the newsletter, now in its seventh year, to guide future forms and directions. Contributions for each weekly issue will continue to be due by the preceding Friday morning. Have a safe and happy festive season.

Showcasing of family therapy courses
You are invited to a mini-showcasing of family therapy courses offered by the School of Social Work and Human Services. Course Coordinators, Dr Brian Sullivan, Joel Cullin and Dr Elisa Agostinelli will discuss their courses and answer questions. Dr Yvonne Darlington (Postgraduate Coursework Director) will speak about how family therapy fits into postgraduate study at UQ. Morning tea will be served. NMR education
A workshop will be held to demonstrate the possibilities of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in Brisbane from December 13 to 17. It is aimed at non-specialists, solution-state NMR users and solid-state NMR beginners. Details: Dr Marianne Gaborieau.
Siemens Science Experience
UQ will host the Siemens Science Experience – a fun three days of hands-on science activities for secondary students about to enter Year 10 in 2009 – from January 20 to 22, 2009. Details: online.
Summer hours for Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic
