Graduands ready for ceremonies

Congratulations to all UQ staff and their family members who will graduate at ceremonies beginning today until December 15. Are you graduating in 2008?

Staff and students graduating this year are encouraged to help the University by taking a few minutes to fill out the Australian Graduate Survey. The survey allows you to report on your experience at UQ, and what you have been doing since you graduated. The AGS is a national survey conducted each year by all Australian universities. Revised parking arrangements approved for 2009

The University Senate has approved revised parking arrangements at UQ for 2009, with most changes at the St Lucia campus. Story

Departure of University Chancellor Sir Llew Edwards, AC

The University of Queensland is paying tribute to Sir Llew Edwards, AC, who will soon bow out as Chancellor after 16 years at the helm of UQ’s governing body. Story

Vice-Chancellor’s address to all staff

All staff are invited to attend an open address by UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield, at 3.30pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, entitled “Reviewing 2008, Previewing 2009”. The address will be followed by a question-and-answer session and be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses. UQ Options Evening

Staff members with prospective tertiary students in their families are reminded that they can speak one-on-one with experienced staff at the UQ Options Evening. Staff at the event to be held between 4.30pm and 7pm on Monday, December 22, in the UQ Centre at the St Lucia campus can advise on pathways to desired programs, preference changes, entry requirements and the QTAC process.

INSIGHT Project invitation to all staff

The INSIGHT Project team invites all staff to a presentation on the development of the UQ brand values, new visual identity and plans for the brand launch and rollout in 2009. Presentations of all the latest developments and materials will be held at various locations in December beginning with St Lucia on Wednesday, December 3, Ipswich and Gatton, Thursday, December 4, and Herston, on Tuesday, December 9. Student email for life

Please be aware that UQ students will soon have an improved email system called UQconnect Email+ for Life. It offers a number of benefits, including a user-friendly, name-based email address, increased mail quota, and the ability to send large attachments. The new service is being piloted over Summer Semester, with a view to moving all student accounts in early 2009. You can still contact students using the existing address format (s123456@student.uq.edu.au) as this mail is forwarded automatically to the new service. Reef field guide launched

The first comprehensive field guide to the Great Barrier Reef was launched by UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield at Customs House last Thursday. Story

New website for Print on Demand (pod)

A websitehas been launched to coincide with the release of a quick and easy new printing system. Located in the UQ Bookshop, pod offers a wide variety of printing and binding services for staff and students. pod is a wholly owned and operated University of Queensland enterprise, run by University of Queensland Press (UQP).

Grant for AustLit, the resource for Australian literature

AustLit, under the leadership of the Executive Dean of Arts, Professor Richard Fotheringham, has won funding of $650,000 to further develop AustLit’s tools and services to the Australian literature research and teaching communities. Other UQ Chief Investigators are Professor David Carter, Professor Joanne Tompkins, Dr Leigh Dale, Kerry Kilner and Keith Webster. It was the second biggest LIEF grant that UQ received for 2009.

Housekeeping matters

Finalise accounts ahead of UniFi

With the impending implementation of UniFi, the new financial system, it’s imperative that all outstanding accounts payable items be finalised before year’s end. These include: general claims for staff reimbursements, travel reimbursement, phone reimbursements, mileage claims and any other types of claims or reimbursements, and outstanding purchasing and executive card reconciliations. The payment of claims need to be lodged with Accounts Payable Section by Friday, December 12, and reconciliations by Monday, December 15.

Update emergency contact details through ESS

For effective management in an emergency crisis situation, staff are asked to keep their contact details up-to-date. Staff who have not already updated their current phone numbers including mobiles, where available, and next-of-kin details, are requested do so by Wednesday, December 24, 2008.

Overseas travel reporting reminder

The University is required by law to submit to State Parliament, as part of the Annual Reporttemplate on the UQ website. It is important that all details are completed on the template, including title and office, and that there is a brief explanation of the purpose of the visit. Please check that amounts and countries are correct before submitting your report.

Final UQ Update for 2008 fast approaching

The UQ Update of December 15 (copy deadline Friday, December 12) will be the final issue for 2008. The newsletter will resume weekly publication from Monday, January 19, 2009. Plans are underway for a survey on the newsletter, now in its seventh year, to guide future forms and directions. Contributions for each weekly issue will continue to be due by the preceding Friday morning. Have a safe and happy festive season.

Friends of Fryer Christmas Party

Dr Veny Armanno will be the speaker at this year’s party. Dr Armanno is a Senior Lecturer in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History, and is the author of a number of novels, including The Dirty Beat. His books have won numerous awards. Low-cost English classes at ICTE-UQ

The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education offers low-cost English language classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of lessons are attended. NMR education

A workshop will be held to demonstrate the possibilities of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in Brisbane from December 13 to 17. It is aimed at non-specialists, solution-state NMR users and solid-state NMR beginners. Details: Dr Marianne Gaborieau.

Siemens Science Experience
