Vice-Chancellor’s address to all staff
All staff are invited to attend an open address by UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Greenfield, at 3.30pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, entitled “Reviewing 2008, Previewing 2009”. The address will be followed by a question-and-answer session and be video-linked from the UQ Centre at St Lucia to Herston, Gatton and Ipswich campuses. INSIGHT Project invitation to all staff
The INSIGHT Project team would like to invite all staff to a presentation on the development of the UQ brand values, new visual identity and plans for our brand launch and rollout in 2009. Innovative centre to be launched
The University of Queensland’s Centre for Educational Innovation and Technology (CEIT) is Australia’s first centre of leadership in educational innovation. Mixing emerging technologies with insightful ideas, the Centre will explore the unlimited opportunities offered to education and researchers by open source technologies. The 2008 Centre for Educational Innovation and Technology Seminar and Centre launch will be held from 9am until 2pm, on Thursday, November 20, General Purpose North 4 (GPN4), Building 14. St Leo’s College Vice-Rector Students
Stephen Foley will commence as Vice-Rector Students at St Leo’s College from January 5, 2009. An old boy of Downlands College, he is a past resident of Kings’ College (UQ) and a graduate of both UQ (arts, education) and QUT (law). He has teaching, administrative and sporting experience both here and overseas and has coached athletics and rugby at an international level, as well as been an international rugby referee.
Intercampus bus timetable – Vacation service for 2008–2009
The Intercampus Bus Schedule has been updated on the web. It includes the following:
- Reduced Service for the 2008–2009 Vacation Period (valid November 17, 2008–December 19, 2008, recommencing January 27, 2009 until February 20, 2009)

Housekeeping matters
Update emergency contact details through ESS
For effective management in an emergency crisis situation, it is imperative that staff contact details are kept up-to-date. Staff who have not already updated their current phone numbers including mobiles, where available, and next-of-kin details, are requested do so by December 24, 2008.
Finalise accounts ahead of UniFi
With the impending implementation of UniFi, the new financial system, it’s imperative that all outstanding accounts payable items be finalised before year’s end. These include: general claims for staff reimbursements, travel reimbursement, phone reimbursements, mileage claims and any other types of claims or reimbursements, and outstanding purchasing and executive card reconciliations. The payment of claims need to be lodged with Accounts Payable Section by December 12, and reconciliations by December 15.
Overseas travel reporting reminder
The University is required by law to submit to State Parliament, as part of the Annual Report, information on overseas travel undertaken by University employees. There is a template on the UQ website for this purpose. It is important that all details are completed on the template, including title and office, and that there is a brief explanation of the purpose of the visit. Please check that amounts and countries are correct before submitting your report.
Funding opportunities
ResTeach – tapping in to our research staff
In the 2009 UQ Budget, $4 million has been set aside from the Enhanced Student Contribution Funds to encourage and facilitate schools to utilise, in a limited fashion, some of the large numbers of research staff who are at UQ. The scheme, named ResTeach, is designed to remove a frequently stated impediment to utilising research staff, namely resource allocation. ResTeach applications for new appointments from 2009 are in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) via Executive Deans by Friday, November 21, 2008. Low-cost English classes at ICTE-UQ
The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education offers low-cost English language classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of lessons are attended. The two-hour lessons are taught in the afternoon and focus on speaking, listening, vocabulary and grammar. NMR education
