ResTeach – tapping in to our research staff

In the 2009 UQ Budget, $4 million has been set aside from the Enhanced Student Contribution Funds to encourage and facilitate schools to utilise research staff. A large majority of these staff currently have little formal contact with undergraduate or graduate coursework students. Applications for the new scheme, ResTeach, can be made through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) via the Executive Dean by Friday, November 21, 2008. Senior Women Seminar

Elizabeth Broderick, Sex Discrimination Commissioner and Commissioner responsible for Age Discrimination, will speak at an Equity Office seminar in the Library Conference Room, 10.45am–noon, Monday, November 24. Commissioner Broderick was this year part of Australia’s delegation to the United Nations for the Commission on the Status of Women. She will discuss

  • her experience in facilitating flexible working arrangements in one of Australia’s most prominent law firms 
  • the findings of her recent Listening Tour and the Plan of Action Towards Gender Equality, and 
  • her views on the Productivity Commission’s proposals for paid maternity, paternity and parental leave.

Volunteers needed: Moreton Bay Research Station open day

This year’s Open Day at UQ’s Moreton Bay Research Station celebrates the International Year of the Reef 2008. Volunteers are needed to help set up and run the event from 9.30am, Friday, November 21, until 5pm, Saturday, November 22. Food and accommodation provided. Details: Zoë Allen, 3409 9058.

Intercampus bus timetable – reduced service for 2008–2009

The Intercampus Bus Schedule has been updated on the web. It includes the following: 

  • Reduced Service for the 2008–2009 Vacation Period (valid November 17, 2008–December 19, 2008, recommencing January 27, 2009 until February 2, 2009). 
  •  First Semester 2009 Timetable (valid February 23, 2009 until June 26, 2009).

Siemens Science Experience

UQ will host the Siemens Science Experience – a fun three days of hands-on science activities for secondary students about to enter Year 10 in 2009 – from January 20 to 22, 2009. Participants will undertake external excursions and participate in various laboratory workshops and lectures conducted by some of UQ’s leading scientific minds. If you prepare and lodge your own tax return the lodgement deadline was October 31. If you lodge through a registered tax agent, your return may be due later. Details: www.ato.gov.au If you have a tax debt and have not lodged by October 31, please phone the ATO’s automated self-help service on 13 28 65 anytime, 24 hours a day, and organise a payment arrangement.
