Highlights include a public lecture featuring Federation Fellows Professor John Quiggin and Professor Paul Burn, to be held on Wednesday, September 24, at the Queensland Bioscience Precinct auditorium, St Lucia, from 6.30pm–9pm. Brisbane Writers Festival starts this week – 17-21 September!
The University of Queensland Faculty of Arts is one of the premier partners supporting the best local and international authors at the 2008 Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF). Up to 220 writers, each with a promise to grow our minds will feature the covering a range of issues that affect every part of our lives. This year UQ is fortunate to have also Yann Martel, Richard Holmes and other international writers presenting workshops here at UQ. For details go to UQ Events. New bicycle end-of-trip facilities
Due to changing trends in demand for bicycle and vehicle parking, UQ Traffic & Parking advises new infrastructure to support bicycle riders. The roof of the Plant Room beside the Otto Hirschfield Building will be the site of a new bike storage area. This bike storage facility will hold approximately 68 bikes and will have 24-hour CCTV coverage. Construction should be completed during November. Work has also started on installing 101 additional bike racks in St Lucia Campus locations including: the Rugby Club, Physics car park, Connell Building, swimming pool, netball courts on Sir William Macgregor Drive, & the UQ Lakes bus stop. Practices Day 2008 next week
The School of Social Work and Human Services Alumni & Friends Network is holding its annual Practices Day on Friday, September 26 at Hillstone, St Lucia from 8.30am–4.30pm. The theme is: “Bringing Creativity to the Health and Human Sciences”. Practices Day is designed to provide a hands-on day of skill development, inspiration and networking for social work and human services students and professionals. Cost: early bird individual $110 (before 5 Sept); individual registration $130; student registration $66.
Law Student Review online
The second issue of the Queensland Law Student Review is now available online. The Review, launched earlier this year, encourages undergraduate and postgraduate students to publish high-quality, in-depth research on contemporary legal and justice issues. The Review also offers a stepping-stone for students seeking to undertake higher research degrees. Win the jackpot at Staff Club, St Lucia quiz night
The Staff Club's popular monthly quiz night continues on Wednesday, September 17 at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, for teams of up to six players. Families wanted to nurture future seeing eye dogs
Seeing Eye Dogs Queensland urgently needs people to give love and guidance to Labrador/Golden Retriever pups in-training for a big future as a Seeing Eye Dog for a Queenslander who is blind or vision impaired. Seeing Eye Dogs Queensland is seeking homes for these puppies for approximately 12 months in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Potential puppy carers are responsible for teaching the pups basic commands, socialising them in all environments and giving love, discipline and exercise. Evolution of the Athlete coach education conference
This year’s conference at UQ from October 26–28 is designed for coaches, teachers, researchers, strength and conditioning specialists, high performance managers and sports trainers. As well as a quality speaker line up, the conference has received support from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). The ASC will officially open the event with an address on “The Future Challenges of Coaches,” followed by Beijing gold medallist, Drew Ginn. Concerned about your child’s skills?
UQ researchers seek parents for a free study to help kids develop skills to manage everyday situations at home, in the community, with family and peers. Parents will be coached in understanding particular learning needs of children and will discover strategies and techniques that work. Participants will have up to eight sessions of about an hour each with an experienced occupational therapist at St Lucia campus.
