Have your say: Staff engagement

Only two weeks remain for fixed term and continuing academic and general staff to voice opinions about how the University is functioning via UQ’s first University-wide staff engagement survey. The University has employed an external survey group to ensure anonymity and confidentiality of responses. Please take 20 minutes to complete the survey before September 5.

Insight project seeks staff input

The Insight team would like to invite interested staff to participate in staff discussion groups for testing brand values and brand concepts. Groups commence the week beginning 1st September. Space will be limited in each of the sessions so please follow this link to the Insight website register your interest.

New UQ Search Facility launched

As of Monday 25th August, a new search facility was implemented for UQ websites. It is expected that the new search will provide finer granularity of searching and improved access to information and content. Initially there will be a change to the UQ Search page and the search on the UQ home page, other pages will follow. Try the new search facility by clicking on "search" from the home page and try the tabs and dropdown options.

UQ is a premier partner of the 2008 Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF)

UQ is actively involved in the BWF program which launches on September 17 at the State Library of Queensland. This year’s stories include the Guantanamo diary from an Afghani-American lawyer, turned translator; a Nigerian-born recipient of the PEN USA Freedom-to-Write Award who gives voice to boy soldiers; a Canadian psychiatrist who has discovered that the brain changes; a child of the cultural revolution discovering daily life in Tibet; an American Newsweek journalist who pays the greatest price for love in war-zone Baghdad; the dark history of chocolate; and British veteran Foreign correspondent Simon Winchester. To accompany the blockbuster exhibition at the UQ Art Museum Centre, St Lucia, a discussion of Why Black: Subversion, street style and fashion will be held at the Mayne Centre on Wednesday, September 3. Join Margaret Maynard, Jinna Tay, Roger Leong and Amber Long in conversation about the multiple meanings, historical precedents and contemporary symbolism of dressing in ‘black’ from 5pm–5.45pm. Hear about UQ’s response to climate change at free breakfast

Climate change is becoming a global and local issue. This free breakfast forum will focus on UQ’s response to climate change. It will be on Thursday, September 4 at the UQ Staff and Graduates Club, St Lucia at 7.15am for 7.30am. Energy consumption, four months after Earth Hour

At the end of March, five UQ campuses and sites (St Lucia, Gatton and Ipswich campuses, Experimental Mine site and Herston site) achieved a combined energy saving of 14.2 percent during Earth Hour. The following Saturday night also showed a saving of 6.7 percent. However, four months later (August 9) energy savings had reduced to 5.1 percent. Remember – switch off, save energy.

Researcher presents interim findings on new media technologies

Melissa Gregg is an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies. She will present a public seminar entitled: Always On: Coping with Constant Connectivity on Tuesday, September 9 at the SS & H Library conference room, Duhig Building, St Lucia Campus. This seminar will present interim findings from one of the first Australian studies looking at the impact of new media technologies on work and home life. UQef scholarships boost humanities

Ten new scholarships in humanities are available from the recently launched University of Queensland Endowment Fund (UQef). Four PhD and six Honours scholarships worth $500,000 will support research in cultural history, new media studies, peace studies and conflict resolution and social aspects of natural resource management and sustainability. Miracle worker awards

UQ staff are invited to the lunch and ceremony on Wednesday, September 10 at 12.15pm for 12.30pm–1.30pm. Recipients of 2008 Miracle Worker Awards will receive certificates from the Chancellor, Sir Llew Edwards. It will be at the Kathleen Room, Staff and Graduates Club. Cost: $30 per person includes Tempura battered fish fillets with tartare sauce & chips, or sirloin steak on potato mash with pan jus, bowl of steamed vegies and garden salad, and freshly brewed coffee & tea with assorted cake slices. Spring walk in the Great Court

On Monday, September 1, the United Nations Student Association (UQ) will host a United Nations Development Fund for Women spring walk around the UQ St Lucia grounds. The walk will start in the Great Court opposite the main entrance to the Forgan Smith Building at 10am. Money raised will go towards UNIFEM Australia's partnership with the IDP Peace Scholarship Trust of IDP Education Australia. This Trust provides opportunities for young women from the Pacific Region to study at Australian Universities. COPD (emphysema) and heart disease study

Are you aged 55 or over? Do you have healthy lungs? If so, you may be eligible to take part in a UQ study. The study involves an interview with a research nurse, a lung function test (spirometry), an ECG (a simple test tracing the electrical activity of your heart), and a blood test. Males needed for meals and metabolism study

UQ and the Princess Alexandra Hospital are researching the effects of a high fat meal on inflammation and blood vessel function. Volunteers are required to attend three appointments at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Results, including body composition studies, are provided. Parking available and subjects will be reimbursed.
