Sunny Open Day attracts crowds

Thanks to staff who worked yesterday helping prospective students and ensuring that Open Day at St Lucia campus was a success. Crowds enjoyed activities throughout the day. The University is also hoping for strong attendances at Ipswich campus Open Day on August 20 from 3.30pm–7.30pm and Gatton campus Open Day on August 24 from 9.30am–3pm, and thanks all staff who will participate in these events. New OMC Deputy Director appointed

Kirsten McHarg has been appointed Deputy Director of the Office of Marketing and Communications. Kirsten has held senior appointments at The University of Western Australia, The University of Waikato (New Zealand) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). She has extensive private sector experience in public relations in Singapore and in operating her own business for over 11 years in New Zealand. Kirsten succeeds Fiona Kennedy, now Executive Communications Advisor, based in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

Nominate someone as a Miracle Worker

Nominations are open for the 2008 Miracle Worker Awards. Staff are invited to nominate any UQ employee who has inspired his/her peers through qualities in the workplace such as exceptional communication, sharing knowledge, providing leadership and willingness to go above and beyond expectations. Award recipients will receive their certificate from Chancellor, Sir Llew Edwards at a lunch ceremony on Wednesday, September 10 at 12.30pm, venue TBA. The General Staff Self Development Prize winner will receive their prize and certificate at this ceremony from Secretary and Registrar Douglas Porter.

Project leader presents findings

Building Peace and Stability: Measuring Effectiveness of Peace and Capacity Building Operations is a joint UQSRC and Australian Federal Police project. It aims to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing the effectiveness of international policing missions, including peace operations and police capacity building. Last week the team, led by Project Director, Professor Alex Bellamy, presented preliminary findings at a Canberra forum at the AFP’s International Deployment Group. Details: online.

Neo goth: free back in black event at Mayne Centre, St Lucia

On Wednesday, August 6 join Lisa O’Connell and Kim Wilkins from the School of English, Media Studies and Art History, as they discuss the origins of the Gothic in literature and its particular cultural moment, and take a guided tour of the genre through to its contemporary manifestations, from 5.30pm-6.15pm. Free — no bookings required. The exhibition is open until 7pm.

Free Daphne Mayo Lecture 2008 on this Thursday

Terry Smith, the Andrew W Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Pittsburgh, will give The Daphne Mayo Lecture on Thursday, August 7 from 6pm–8.30pm at the Mayne Centre. Topic: The History of Contemporary Art: Paradoxes and Antinomies. Recycle Your Old LEGO toys

Donate your old LEGO to a worthy cause. Dr Rosalie Boyce from the School of Pharmacy has volunteered to help a local primary school set up a lunch time/after school LEGO Maniacs Club. Your old LEGO would be going to a worthy cause. She needs thousands of pieces so please look in all those old cupboards. Are you committed to social justice principles?

Places are available for staff to become Discrimination and Harassment Contact Officers (DHCOs). Staff with an understanding of, and commitment to, social justice principles and a high level of discretion are invited to apply for a two-day Discrimination and Harassment Contact Officer (DHCO) course on August 21 and 22. DHCOs can be a first point of contact for people with enquiries about University policies and procedures related to discrimination and harassment (including sexual harassment and bullying). DHCOs assist by exploring options for resolution with the staff member or student. Details, and to register: visit the Staff Development Program website.

Pain seminar on Thursday

Dr Kylie Tucker, a postdoctoral research fellow with the CCRE SPINE, School of Health and Rehab Sciences, will give a seminar entitled: Motor control changes with pain: Controversies and research implications. Social team sport competitions soon

The UQ SPORT social team sport competitions for semester two begin on August 10. The season runs for 10 weeks including finals. Enter an Outdoor Netball, Indoor Netball, Indoor Soccer, 7 a Side Soccer, 7 a Side Hockey or Water Polo team. Details: online.

Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers 40 yrs of age and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial aiming to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study involves balance and strength tests (free), and 10 weekly 1hr small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia. Assessments are available by appointment on Mondays/ Wednesdays. Participants needed for low back pain research

Volunteers (18-35 years) with or without low back pain are invited to participate in a study which takes one 4 hour session. $30 is available to participants who complete the study. Details: Jan.

Do you, or someone you know, care for a person with dementia?

UQ researchers have developed a correspondence-based program to assist with the demands of being a carer. Carers involved in ‘The Coping with Caring Program’ will receive a number of weekly workbooks to address the issues of caring for someone with Alzheimer's and (or) dementia. Males sought for driving study

Male participants aged 20-45 are sought for an obstacle avoidance driving task (one session of 1 hour) in a VR simulation of an underground shuttle car which has a lever steering control. They should have at least two years driving experience and not be susceptible to motion sickness. The experiment is in the VR Lab, Human Movement Studies Building, St Lucia. Contact Christine.
