Public performances highlight health issues
Enrolled student volunteers from the School of Psychology will conduct public activities (soap-box presentations and street theatre) on the St Lucia campus during the first few weeks of semester to raise awareness of mental health issues. Short performances by the students will be conducted at various locations across the St Lucia campus. These activities are an initiative of Student Services and the Student Counselling team.
MIS review planned for September
Staff members are invited to make a submission to the Management Information Section (MIS) review, to be held on September11-12. Nominations are open for the 2008 Miracle Worker Awards. Staff are invited to nominate any UQ employee who has inspired his/her peers through qualities in the workplace such as exceptional communication, sharing knowledge, providing leadership and willingness to go above and beyond expectations. Staff invited to inaugural meeting of Narrative Research Group
TEDI staff hope to develop a regional inter-disciplinary research group to support and develop the use of narratives in qualitative research. With the backing of Merrilyn Goos (TEDI Director), a TEDI group is holding an “interest-gathering” first meeting on July 29 at 9.30am at the 5th floor, Dorothy Hill Library (Building #50), St Lucia. It is envisaged that this group will meet face to face about two–three times a year while being supported by an active online community. Seminar next week looks at disease in developing world
Staff are invited to Developing drugs for the treatment of neglected diseases of the developing world, a seminar presented by Dr Rob Don, senior program director, Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Centre for Integrated Preclinical Drug Development (CIPDD). A morning tea and networking opportunity will follow the seminar, at 10am–11am on Friday, August 8 at the Kathleen Room, UQ Staff and Graduates Club, St Lucia. The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) presents an intensive three-day workshop to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to deal with workplace conflict, using a range of effective processes. ACPACS also presents an intensive three-day workshop focusing on the skills and theories behind successful negotiations. Participants will explore the role of negotiation in their personal lives, as well as an adjunct to litigation, contract formation and in general business practice. The course centres on skills acquisition through practical exercises and is supplemented by conflict resolution theory and empirical studies. It will be on October 1–3 from 9am–5pm at UQ St Lucia. Get your fitness assessed at discounted rates
The Practicum Placement Personal Training (PPPT) Program is a community-based program coordinated by UQ SPORT with the University’s Health Sciences Faculty. The program gives third year Exercise Science students with practicum placement opportunities within UQ SPORT and the general community. The PPPT Program also enables members of the local community to participate in a full eight-week personal training program at the discounted rate of $230. This eight-week program consists of preliminary and final fitness assessments (up to one hour each), eight, one-hour personal training sessions (one per week), and a personalised program and fitness report. Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed
The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus. Male volunteers required for study
The Division of Speech Pathology is looking for male control volunteers aged 15–58 years. Volunteers will have their brain waves measured and will undertake some question and answer assessments. Testing is done on campus at St Lucia and will take approx. 3 ½ hours. Details: Caroline Barwood or phone ext. 56162.
Participants sought for email communication in the workplace study
Academic and general staff are sought to complete a 15-20 minute survey that aims to assess the impact of email communication in the workplace. The survey is being undertaken by a PhD candidate (School of Psychology) working with Associate Professor Julie Duck and Dr Nerina Jimmieson. The survey is for UQ staff, and should not be completed by postgraduate students or research assistants. It is online. Activity and cognition in older adults: participants needed
The School of Human Movement Studies and the School of Psychology seek adults 65 years and older for a study on the relationship between physical activity, fitness, mental activity, and personality. Participants will attend two interviews at times and locations convenient to them and wear a pedometer for a week. They will receive $40 gift vouchers for their participation. Volunteers needed for neck pain research
Researchers in the physiotherapy division seek people who have had neck pain for at least 30 days in the past 12 months, to participate in a one hour research program. They will use surface electromyography electrodes to record activity from the muscles of your neck during two computer-based tasks. A movie voucher is available to eligible participants.
