New look for Programs and Courses website
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), Professor Deborah Terry invites staff to attend one of two information sessions on the recently established Programs and Courses Website Interface Project. The project aims to increase the effectiveness of the Programs and Courses website as a recruitment tool for 2009 admissions. The project’s objective has been to optimise the accessibility and usability of the “front end” of the website as an interim step until the new UQ corporate design and full database functionality are available in 2009. OMC anticipates being able to release the new interface in time for TSXPO on July 19.
The sessions will be held in the Senate Room, Level 5, Brian Wilson Chancellery (Building #61A), St Lucia on Tuesday, July 15, at 3–4pm and Thursday, July 17 at 9–10am. There is no need to register. A guide to changes will be available at each information session. Unfortunately, separate information sessions will not be held at Ipswich or Gatton campuses. However, a guide to the UQ Programs and Courses Website Interface changes can be emailed by making a request to Karen Hendrickson.
Nobel Laureate to speak at UQ
UQ staff and students will be able to hear first-hand about a famous scientific discovery when Professor Barry Marshall presents a UQ public lecture on July 24. Awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his research partner Dr Robin Warren for work on stomach ulcers and gastric cancer, Professor Marshall will speak at the Queensland Biosciences Precinct Auditorium (Building #80) at 6pm. Goodenough lecture at QBI tomorrow
The inaugural Peter Goodenough Memorial Lecture will be presented by eminent Australian scientist Sir Gustav Nossal, AC, CBE tomorrow Tuesday, July 15 at 5pm–6pm at the level 7 Auditorium, Queensland Brain Institute (#Building 79), Upland Road, St Lucia. School of Music staff & graduates perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club
The Tropical Dance Orchestra will feature staff and graduates from the UQ School of Music for the Paris meets Rio evening of dance, bossa-nova classics and Django-style favourites at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Sunday, July 20, 6-9pm. The 13-piece dance orchestra will perform with Django-style guitarist Paul Bulanyi (ex Monsieur Camembert) and bossa-nova/choro guitarist Jason Machado. Get your fitness assessed at discounted rates
The Practicum Placement Personal Training (PPPT) Program is a community-based program coordinated by UQ SPORT with the University’s Health Sciences Faculty. The program gives third year Exercise Science students with practicum placement opportunities within UQ SPORT and the general community. The PPPT Program also enables members of the local community to participate in a full eight-week personal training program at the discounted rate of $230. This eight-week program consists of preliminary and final fitness assessments (up to one hour each), eight one-hour personal training sessions (one per week), and a personalised program and fitness report. Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed
The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus. The Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury physiotherapy clinic conducts comprehensive assessments to identify and treat ailments. Sessions are one hour and the clinic operates from 8–4pm. Concerned about your child’s skills?
UQ researchers are seeking parents to be involved in a free study to help kids develop skills to manage everyday situations at home, in the community, with family and peers. Parents will be coached in understanding particular learning needs of their children and will discover the strategies and techniques that work. The intervention will focus directly on goals for your child. Participants will have up to eight sessions of about an hour each with an experienced occupational therapist at the St Lucia campus. Volunteer for functional brain imaging
The Centre for Magnetic Resonance is conducting brain mapping studies involving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and are seeking healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 40 years. Volunteers will be asked to perform an interactive psychological task in a MRI scanner. For example, it could involve viewing images projected onto a screen, and/or hearing words presented through headphones, and making some sort of response, either by pressing a button or speaking out loud. Each session will take about 60 minutes, and participants will be reimbursed $30 for travel costs/participation. Participants should be right-handed and have English as a first language; no history of significant head injury, neurological or psychiatric disorder; and 20/20 natural or corrected vision. Activity and cognition in older adults: participants needed
The School of Human Movement Studies and the School of Psychology seek adults 65 years and older for a study on the relationship between physical activity, fitness, mental activity, and personality. Participants will attend two interviews at times and locations convenient to them and wear a pedometer for a week. They will receive $40 gift vouchers for their participation.
