New UQ scholarships on offer

The University has launched a new merit-based scholarships package for students starting university in 2009. The new academic scholarships program, valued at over $1.6m in 2009 and growing to $4m over the next five years, has been designed to support high-achieving undergraduate students at UQ. Story

Artwork sings for sustainability

Dr Kumi Kato from the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies has received $50,000 in funding from Arts Queensland for the installation of a “sound garden” in the Roma Street Parklands, which should be completed in August and will be used as part of the 2008 Queensland Multicultural Festival. Dr Rosa Alati of the School of Population Health has won the Excellence in Research division of the National Drug and Alcohol Awards for her alcohol research. Story

School of Music staff & graduates perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club

The Tropical Dance Orchestra will feature staff and graduates from the UQ School of Music for the Paris meets Rio evening of dance, bossa-nova classics and Django-style favourites at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Sunday, July 20, 6-9pm. The 13-piece dance orchestra will perform with Django-style guitarist Paul Bulanyi (ex Monsieur Camembert) and bossa-nova/choro guitarist Jason Machado. The UQ Art Museum at St Lucia continues its current exhibitions: Shaun Gladwell; Repeat That Again! — The serial impulse in art since the ‘sixties; Sidney Nolan: The Slates; and Blooms, Beauty and Babes until July 13. The blockbuster neo goth: back in black exhibition exploring goth/emo/surf/indie/punk opens on July 25.

Free public seminar this month for Critical and Cultural Studies

Street Youth In Transition: Becoming a Street Adult in Java, Indonesia is the topic of a Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies public seminar: on Tuesday, July 29 at 2pm to 3pm at the Social Sciences and Humanities Library conference room, Level 1, Duhig Building (#2), St Lucia. Presenter Dr Harriot Beazley is a lecturer in the School of Social Work and Human Services and a Research Associate in UQ’s Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Applications close July 31 for the 2009 Fulbright Symposium

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers an annual grant of $A30,000 to a university, group, or individual, to host what is recognised as the Fulbright Symposium. The Symposium focuses on a topic of current bi-national interest between Australia and the United States and engages leading speakers from both countries. Short tax return and phone lodgment service

If you have simpler tax affairs and do not wish to use e-tax, you may be eligible to use the Short tax return for individuals 2008. The Australian Tax Office will send you the short tax return instead of TaxPack if the ATO thinks that you can use it. You should use the checklist in the short tax return to ensure that you are eligible. You can lodge the short tax return over the phone. On completion of the short tax return, call 13 28 65, listen to the questions and read out your answers from the short tax return. You can also lodge it by mail. You can obtain the Short tax return for individuals 2008 by visiting the ATO website and selecting Booklets and publications – Online Ordering, or phone 1300 720 092 and use the self-help option, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tickets on sale for Brisbane Gang Show at Schonell Theatre

Celebrate the Year of the Scout at the Brisbane Gang Show, musical variety performed by more than 100 members of the Scouts and Guides, from July 4 to 12. Now in its 57th year, it is one of the longest running consecutive Gang Shows in the world. Book online.

Enrolments have opened for Term 3 UQKids School's In programs. These programs cater for your child's interests with specific sports clinics. Children will learn new skills and develop an interest in specific sports through comprehensive skill development programs that promote maximum participation and emphasise fun. Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus.
