Nobel Laureate to speak at UQ

UQ staff and students will be able to hear first-hand about a famous scientific discovery when Professor Barry Marshall presents a UQ public lecture on July 24. Awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his research partner Dr Robin Warren for work on stomach ulcers and gastric cancer, Professor Marshall will speak at the Queensland Biosciences Precinct Auditorium (Building #80) at 6pm. NAIDOC Week display in the Library

NAIDOC celebrations in Australia in July celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC originally stood for "National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee", which was responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week. Its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. In conjunction with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, the Library has a display in the Exhibition Space, Level 1, Duhig Building, St Lucia, highlighting some of the Unit’s achievements, and a short history of NAIDOC Week (July 6-13). The display continues until July 31.

Sewer project wins award in Singapore

A collaborative project led by University of Queensland researchers, which has saved Gold Coast Water and Sydney Water Corporation millions of dollars in sewer management, has won an international award in Singapore. Story

Do you want to be more resilient?

Would you like to know how to manage workplace and personal stress? UQ psychologists are running a free psychological resilience and stress management program for non-academic staff. It’s tax time

Last year more than 1.9 million people used e-tax to lodge their tax return online. In 2008, e-tax gives you access to more individual information through the pre-filling service. The service provides details about your income including salary and wages, government payments, interest, dividends and managed fund distributions. Most refunds are issued in 14 days or less when you lodge with e-tax. Go to www.ato.gov.au/etax to download e-tax from tomorrow, July 1.

Free Coffee+ART with three Brisbane artists

Leonard Brown, Gemma Smith and Madonna Staunton – three Brisbane artists represented in the exhibition Repeat That Again! Guided tour of Repeat That Again! exhibition at UQ Art Museum

Michele Helmrich, UQ Art Museum Curator and the curator of Repeat That Again! The serial impulse in art since the ‘sixties, will lead a free guided tour of the exhibition on Friday July 4, at 12pm at the UQ Art Museum. The exhibition, drawing on works in the University’s collection, looks at how artists over the last four decades have used repetition and systems to different ends. It continues until 13 July. Staff invited to a discussion about seriality in contemporary art

The UQ Art Museum will host a free event: In conversation: Dr Rosemary Hawker & Dr Miranda Wallace (chaired by Associate Professor Rex Butler), on seriality in contemporary art, to coincide with the exhibition Repeat That Again! The serial impulse in art since the ‘sixties. Rosemary Hawker is Senior Lecturer in Art Theory, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Miranda Wallace is Senior Managerial Researcher at the Queensland Art Gallery. Associate Professor Rex Butler lectures in Art History in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History, UQ. Semester two registrations open for professional legal courses

The TC Beirne School of Law’s Executive Education courses are now open for registration for semester 2, 2008. Professional Legal Courses are suitable for people who have an interest in contemporary legal issues. Courses within the series may be used as credit towards the Master of Laws, the Master of Applied Law and Associated Diploma and Certificate programs, as long as participants meet the program entry requirements and undertake assessment for the course. Enrolments have opened for Term 3 UQKids School's In programs. These programs cater for your child's interests with specific sports clinics. Children will learn new skills and develop an interest in specific sports through comprehensive skill development programs that promote maximum participation and emphasise fun. Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus. Participants needed at Queensland Brain Institute

Do you experience colours when you see or hear words, letters or numbers? Do you have a friend or relative who does? QBI researchers are conducting research on synaesthesia, in which perception in one sense triggers experiences in another. The study involves behavioural investigations of visual perception, and recording the brain’s electrical signals from the scalp. Clinical psychological services & neuropsychological assessments available

The Psychology Clinic provides general clinical psychology services to clients of different age groups, with varying emotional and psychological problems. Typical opening hours are: Monday–Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm and a limited after-hours clinic is also available. Fees are $40 per hour and $25 per hour for full-time students and pensioners. Are you a parent? Feeling stressed?

A new parenting program is being offered for parents who are feeling pressure from the demands of parenthood. The program is run in small groups and is open to anyone caring for a child/or children aged between two-10 years, is feeling down, stressed or unable to cope in the parenting role and can attend eight sessions at the St Lucia campus. Are you having trouble hearing?

UQ researchers seek volunteers who have trouble hearing, for a study on hearing rehabilitation decision-making. Participants will receive a free hearing screening and discussion of their hearing needs with a qualified UQ audiologist. The audiologist will help participants decide what they can do to improve their hearing. Participation involves two meetings at St Lucia campus, each meeting lasting one and a half hours.
