Traffic changes during Boggo Road busway construction
Translink advises that construction of the $226 million Boggo Road Busway is under way with new work starting at the cycleway from Annerley Road to UQ. This work requires temporary closure of the cycleway. Cyclists will share pedestrian access through Dutton Park and across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge to UQ until Sunday, August 31. Brisbane City Council has approved a traffic management plan and signage has been installed. Please be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists while this diversion is in place. Procedures for dealing with student discipline & misconduct
As part of the SASD Senate Seminar Series, an information session on procedures for dealing with student discipline and misconduct matters will be held on Wednesday, June 18 from 2–3pm in the Senate Room, St Lucia. Topics include: What is misconduct?; Decision-making; Procedures for hearing misconduct (including amendments to HUPP 3.60.1: Procedures for Dealing with Student Discipline and Misconduct Matters); and Record-keeping. Presenters will include the Academic Registrar and the Secretary, Disciplinary Board. Monash award applications open
Applications for the 2009 General Sir John Monash Awards close on August 31. The Awards are to develop Australia’s future leaders and each award provides up to $150,000 (Australian income tax exempt) over three years. They support study for a degree of PhD, DPhil or equivalent or to a relevant professional Masters Degree. The award winners are chosen on a national basis by a National Awards Committee. Applicants are interviewed and short-listed first by State and Territory Panels, chaired by current or retired Vice-Chancellors.

Apply for the 2009 Fulbright Scholarships
Applications close on August 31, 2008 for Fulbright scholarships, which are valued at up to $A40,000, and open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for 3–12 months. Scholarships can be started between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Applications are open to Postgraduates (to do research related to their Australian PhD. or enrol in a U.S. degree); and Postdoctoral, Professional and Senior Scholars from any field of study. Apply now for General Staff Self Development Prize 2008
June 30 is the closing date for the $150 General Staff Self Development Prize open to general staff employed at UQ for more than three years. The prize is awarded to a staff member demonstrating outstanding achievements in self-development (academic or non-academic). There is no application form. Eligible staff can submit a written application to: "Confidential", General Staff Self Development Prize, Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes Office, JD Story Building.
Mediation workshop from June 23 to 27 at St Lucia
The Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies is organising a five-day Mediation workshop for staff and postgraduate students this month, presented by Professor Nadja Alexander, Co-Director, Conflict Resolution and Practice, ACPACS. It will focus on essential negotiation, mediation and communication skills to effectively resolve disputes; skills to assist in creating innovative solutions and develop alternative approaches to deal with conflict situations. Winter workshops for postgraduates in social sciences
Research higher degree students from UQ and other universities are invited to attend two workshops on social inequality. Both workshops will be delivered by distinguished international scholars in an interactive mode. The workshops will assist students from sociology, political science, criminology, education, social work, economics and population health. They are supported by UQ’s Institute for Social Science Research, the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Social Science and the School of Education.

Participants needed at Queensland Brain Institute
Do you experience colours when you see or hear words, letters or numbers? Do you have a friend or relative who does? If so, QBI researchers would like to hear from you. They are conducting research on the phenomenon of synaesthesia, in which perception in one sense triggers experiences in another. The study involves behavioural investigations of visual perception, and recording of the brain’s electrical signals from the scalp during synaesthetic experiences. Men behind wheels … male drivers needed for VR simulation study
Male participants (aged 20–45 years) are needed for an obstacle avoidance driving task (one hour session) in a VR simulation of an underground shuttle car. Volunteers will each receive $15 and should have at least two years’ driving experience and not be susceptible to motion sickness. The experiment is located in the VR Lab, in the Human Movement Studies Building, St Lucia campus. Details:Christine Zupanc.
