Natural disasters in China and Burma
The University has extended condolences to the people of China via the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Mr Zhang Junsai. Professor Richard Morgan of the Centre for Hypersonics was in Sichuan, lecturing colleagues from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre during the May 12 earthquake. Professor Morgan and his audience of 50 people survived, but six people from the Centre died.
Donate to appeal for surviving children
Professor Max Lu (AIBN & School of Engineering) advises that the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia has established a Sichuan Earthquake Surviving Children's Education Fund. The non-profit organisation aims to enable orphaned, injured or disabled children of Beichuan County, Sichuan to continue school. More than 80 percent of Beichuan Town buildings were demolished in the quake and 1000 teachers and students were buried at Beichuan High School. The AIBN Postgraduate Student Association held a lunch prepared by Chinese students at UQ. It attracted 200 plus people, and raised $4600.
Relocations for JD Story Building, St Lucia
From Monday, June 2, teams from the Advancement Office, Student Administration, and some teams from UQ International and the Office of Marketing and Communications will relocate to newly-refurbished workspaces on Levels 2 & 7 of the JD Story Building. Phone and fax numbers will remain unchanged. Employees who are moving will receive information to assist with move preparations next week.
U.S. expert argues for new maths technologies in education
Professor Daniel Kaplan, DeWitt Wallace Professor, Mathematics & Computer Science, Macalester College, Minnesota, will give a guest lecture: Towards a Calculus for our Era: Remodelling Maths Education in Today's University on Tuesday, June 24, from 10am to midday in Room 228, Molecular Biosciences Building, St Lucia (#76). Staff invited to UQ Blended Learning conference & event
This full-day event on Thursday, June 19 explores embedding the use of technology alongside traditional face-to-face teaching to enhance the student experience. Keynote speakers include: David Nicol (University of Strathclyde), Peter Goodyear (University of Sydney), Phil Long (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Ian Cameron (UQ). The BEL Faculty is offering Commonwealth Supported Postgraduate Scholarships to general staff employed in full-time continuing appointment/s for at least two years. General clinical services available at Psychology Clinic
The Psychology Clinic provides general clinical psychology services to clients of different age groups, with varying emotional and psychological problems. Typical opening hours are: Monday–Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm and a limited after-hours clinic is also available. Fees: $40 per hour & $25 per hour for full-time students and pensioners. June 30 is the closing date for the $150 General Staff Self Development Prize open to general staff employed at UQ for more than three years. The prize is awarded to a staff member demonstrating outstanding achievements in self-development (academic or non-academic). There is no application form. Are you a parent of a two–10 year old child?
The Parenting and Family Support Centre seeks parents of children aged 2–10 years for a study assessing the acceptability and usefulness of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. Participation involves attending a session at St Lucia of less than an hour. Participants will watch a video, complete a questionnaire and a short telephone survey. Associate Professor David Colquhoun of the School of Medicine seeks volunteers for the following studies:
- To investigate the effect of emerging pain relief therapy on individuals with rheumatoid arthritis or osteo-arthritis. Volunteers with a personal or family history of heart problems are preferred. Details: Kyli McCorry, phone 3876 5688.
- To investigate the potential blood pressure lowering effects of a new combination of medications. Potential volunteers with high blood pressure can be on existing blood pressure lowering medications but this is not essential. Details: Stacey Goodwin, phone 3876 5688.
