It’s Diversity Week
All staff and students are encouraged to attend the free Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Awards evening on Wednesday, May 14 at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. A highlight will be a panel discussion and open forum convened by broadcaster, writer and film-maker Phillip Adams AO. The discussion point is "Wired for warfare? Packaged for peace? Does spirituality divide more than it unites?"
Speakers will be Professor Hurriyet Babacan, Professor of Social and Cultural Development at Victoria University, Ms Mary Graham, an Aboriginal elder with expertise in child welfare, and Dr Virginia Cawagas, co-Conference Program Chair of the recent Asia-Pacific Interfaith Symposium. Fulbrights information session planned for Friday
Honours students, research higher degree candidates, postdoctoral researchers, academic staff and professionals are invited to an information session on the Fulbright Scholarships for Australian citizens to study or research in the United States in 2009. Fulbright Scholarships for Australian Citizens available in 2009 include the following types: Professional – up to A$25,000; Senior Scholars – up to A$30,000; Postgraduate – up to A$40,000; Postdoctoral – up to A$30,000. Postgraduate education student vodcasts released
The Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation (CMLR) has released three student vodcasts showcasing their research activities and describing their CMLR experiences. Featured are an environmental science student, a senior environmental officer employed on a Qld mine site and an agriculturist turned PhD student. The vodcasts can be viewed online, downloaded via iTunes or off-line using an iPod. All three videos were produced by CMLR's education Manager Dr Alex Pudmenzky. CMLR is a centre of the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI).

Low cost English classes offered at ICTE-UQ
The Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education offers low cost English language classes to all adult learners. A 36-hour course costs only $30 if 90 percent of the lessons are attended. The two-hour lessons are taught in the afternoon and focus on speaking, listening, vocabulary and grammar. Teachers are training to become qualified English Language teachers. Queensland women and girls — be rewarded for your achievements

Recognition for UQ executive assistant
Karen Hendrickson, President of UQ Secretaries and Office Professionals Association and Executive Assistant to Professor Terry, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) was announced as a finalist in the AIOP (Australian Institute of Office Professionals) 2008 Office Professional of the Year at the Office Professionals’ Day Breakfast held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on May 2. Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce presented the award to the winner and finalists.
Romance, murder, deceit, and comedy in UQ Drama production
Actors from the UQ Drama program will perform one of the most successful and popular Gothic melodramas of the 18th Century, The Castle Spectre, at the UQ Lakes, St Lucia this month. The season commences May 21 (preview), and continues on May 22, 23 and 24 at 7pm. Tickets: adults, $12; concessions, $8; preview $5. UQ’s Health Care Team Challenge is on again
The 2008 Health Care Team Challenge will be held on May 19 from 5– 7pm at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. The challenge is a public competition between inter-professional student teams with representatives from nine disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Student teams develop and present a management plan for a complex clinical case study, to a panel of expert judges and a live audience. Before the event, at 4 – 5pm, guest speaker Joanne Travaglia (University of New South Wales) will discuss the relationship between interprofessional learning and patient safety. Great Court Race heats and finals coming up
The Great Court Race is a proud tradition at UQ and is now in its 24th year. The race covers a 636-metre lap of the Great Court at St Lucia and is based on the historic Cambridge University race. This year heats will take place on Wednesday, May 21 with Great Court Race finals on Wednesday, May 28. To write yourself into the UQ history books register online for heats no later than 5pm, Tuesday, May 20.
Time to compete in the Maunsell Distance Classic
The Maunsell Distance Classic returns to the UQ Athletic Centre on May 30. The meet will feature the following categories: 5000 metres — Open Men; and 3000 metres — Open Women, Tertiary and Secondary School males and females. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that affects more young adult Australians than any other neurological condition. Volunteers aged 18 + sought for Carpal tunnel syndrome study
Do you have pain, tingling or numbness in your wrist, hands or fingers? Does this wake you at night or get worse when you hold things? Have you been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but have not yet had an operation? If your answer is yes, would you be interested in helping to research the effects of acupuncture in the management of this condition? Are you a parent of a two–10 year old child?
The Parenting and Family Support Centre is seeking parents of children aged 2–10 years for a study assessing the acceptability and usefulness of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. Participation involves attending a session at the St Lucia Campus that will take less than an hour. Participants will be asked to watch a video, complete a questionnaire and take part in a short follow-up telephone survey. Volunteers sought for knee osteoarthritis study
The UQ Division of Physiotherapy is investigating pain mechanisms underlying knee osteoarthritis. Researchers are looking for two groups of volunteers between the ages 35–80 years: people diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one or both knees; or people with asymptomatic/nil bodily pain in the past 12 months that has required treatment. Volunteers will undergo sensory testing that is not painful. The testing session will take approximately one hour. Associate Professor David Colquhoun of the School of Medicine seeks volunteers for the following studies:
- To investigate the effect of emerging pain relief therapy on individuals with rheumatoid arthritis or osteo-arthritis. Volunteers with a personal or family history of heart problems are preferred. Details: Kyli McCorry, phone 3876 5688.
- To investigate the potential blood pressure lowering effects of a new medication. Potential volunteers with high blood pressure can be on existing blood pressure lowering medications but this is not essential. Details: Stacey Goodwin, phone3876 5688.
- To investigate the effects of weight loss medication in individuals who have had a stroke, heart attack, stable angina or intermittent claudication. Details: Kyli McCorry, phone 3876 5688.
Would you like to be more effective in supporting your child at home?
Parents are invited to take part in a free occupational therapy coaching intervention that aims to improve children’s skills through coaching. Some areas that can be addressed in this study include managing family routines such as getting ready for school, completing homework; specific skill problems such as dressing, cutlery use, playing with friends; or general issues such as physical skills, thinking skills or social skills. The researchers particularly seek children having particular difficulties, including those with diagnoses (such as ADHD, DCD, Intellectual Disability, Developmental Delay) or children just struggling to learn the skills typical for their peers. Volunteers sought for voice study
The Division of Speech Pathology invites volunteers, aged 18–65, to participate in a study investigating whether voice problems can be assessed via the internet using video-conferencing. Researchers seek participants who rely on their voice as a main tool in their jobs (lecturer, teacher, lawyer, etc.) and either report symptoms of vocal problems (such as fatigue, vocal strain, hoarseness) or who have been diagnosed with a voice disorder.
