Free event: Informal talk on the Nolan slates tomorrow

Associate Professor Nancy Underhill, editor of Nolan on Nolan: Sidney Nolan in his own words, will present an informal talk on Sidney Nolan – The Slates tomorrow, Wednesday, May 7 at 10.30am at the UQ Art Museum, St Lucia. Dr Underhill was Director of the UQ Art Museum when this group of works was acquired. Nolan completed a series of approximately 20 paintings on slate tiles between December 1941 and early February 1942, 18 of which entered the University’s collection in 1977. Phillip Adams to host Diversity Week panel

All staff and students are encouraged to attend the free Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Awards evening on Wednesday, May 14 at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. A highlight will be a panel discussion and open forum convened by broadcaster, writer and film-maker Phillip Adams. The discussion point is "Wired for warfare? Packaged for peace? Poster session showcases innovative student equity initiatives

Coordinators of projects funded by the Commonwealth Higher Education Equity Support Program (HEESP) will present and discuss their strategies at a poster session on May 13 at the SMI Seminar room, level 4, Sir James Foots Building (#47A), St Lucia. Staff and students invited to free 'religion in the media' public lecture

The School of Journalism & Communication seminar series continues on Thursday, May 15 with a public lecture by Dr Peter Horsfield, RMIT University, Melbourne. His presentation is entitled Researching Religion in the Media and Communication Academy. It will be held in the Cybrary Conference Room, Duhig Building (#2) from 3pm, and will be followed by drinks and savouries. Lecture considers trends in democracy during Howard years

The Spin We're In: Media and Democracy in Post-Howard Australia is the title of the Henry Mayer Lecture to be held on Thursday, May 22 at 5.30pm in the UQ Art Museum, St Lucia. Professor Rodney Tiffen of the University of Sydney will be the presenter. Seminar explores research collaboration opportunities

Am I No 12? Hepatitis National Awareness Week

Am I Number 12? relates to the statistic that one in 12 people worldwide are living with hepatitis B or C. This year's National Hepatitis Awareness Week begins on May 19. This year’s theme — Am I Number 12? — will be launched internationally on May 19. The Hepatitis Council of Queensland will hold awareness raising activities throughout this week. UQ’s Health Care Team Challenge is on again

The 2008 Health Care Team Challenge will be held on May 19 from 5– 7pm at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. The challenge is a public competition between inter-professional student teams with representatives from nine disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Student teams develop and present a management plan for a complex clinical case study, to a panel of expert judges and a live audience. Before the event, at 4 – 5pm, guest speaker Joanne Travaglia (University of New South Wales) will discuss the relationship between interprofessional learning and patient safety. Great Court Race heats and finals coming up

The Great Court Race is a proud tradition at UQ and is now in its 24th year. The race covers a 636-metre lap of the Great Court at St Lucia and is based on the historic Cambridge University race. This year heats will take place on Wednesday, May 21 with Great Court Race finals on Wednesday, May 28. To write yourself into the UQ history books register online for heats no later than 5pm, Tuesday, May 20.

Time to compete in the Maunsell Distance Classic

The Maunsell Distance Classic returns to the UQ Athletic Centre on May 30. The meet will feature the following categories: 5000 metres — Open Men; and 3000 metres — Open Women, Tertiary and Secondary School males and females. Details: contact the UQ Athletic Centre, ext. 56055.

Join the 2008 MS Brissie to the Bay bike ride

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that affects more young adult Australians than any other neurological condition. Join UQ as we fundraise for this cause by participating in the 2008 MS Brissie to the Bay Bike Ride taking place on Sunday, June 1. Register or make a donation online at www.brissietothebay.com.au. Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus.
