Phillip Adams to host Diversity Week Panel

All staff and students are encouraged to attend the free Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Awards evening on Wednesday, May 14 at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. A highlight will be a panel discussion and open forum convened by broadcaster, writer and film-maker Phillip Adams. The discussion point is "Wired for warfare? Packaged for peace? Does spirituality divide more than it unites?"

Speakers will be Professor Hurriyet Babacan, Professor of Social and Cultural Development at Victoria University, Ms Mary Graham, an Aboriginal elder with expertise in child welfare, and Dr Virginia Cawagas, co-Conference Program Chair of the recent Asia-Pacific Interfaith Symposium. UQ Bookshop has new trading hours

The University Bookshop at Staff House Road, St Lucia is now trading: Monday-Friday, 8.30am-5.30pm; Saturday, 9am-4pm; and Sunday, 10am-4pm.

Book for staff influenza (flu) vaccinations clinics

Bookings for staff influenza clinics are available for clinics from April 30 until May 23 at the St Lucia campus. Details: the staff flu program website. This site has a consent form which you should print out and bring to your appointment. Please read the information links on flu vaccination before your appointment, especially if you have not had the vaccine previously.

Curator gives insider talk tomorrow at UQ Art Museum, St Lucia

Have you studied Art History and imagine yourself working as a curator? Nicholas Chambers will talk about the transition from student to curator and give an insider’s view of what sounds like a dream job. Nicholas is Curator of International Contemporary Art (Queensland Art Gallery/GoMA). UQ’s Health Care Team Challenge is on again

The 2008 Health Care Team Challenge will be held on May 19 from 5– 7pm at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. The challenge is a public competition between inter-professional student teams with representatives from nine disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Student teams develop and present a management plan for a complex clinical case study, to a panel of expert judges and a live audience. Before the event, at 4 – 5pm, guest speaker Joanne Travaglia (University of New South Wales) will discuss the relationship between interprofessional learning and patient safety. Attend UQ Blended Learning conference & event

This event on Thursday, June 19 explores the use of technology alongside traditional face-to-face teaching to enhance the student experience. It will feature live keynote speeches delivered between the three participating universities (Hertfordshire, Calgary & Queensland). Speakers include: David Nicol (University of Strathclyde & Director of the Re-engineering Assessment Practices [REAP] project). UQ workshop looks at the many faces of ePortfolios

This interactive workshop is sponsored by the Office of the DVC (Teaching & Learning) and the eLearning Sub-committee. It is a starting point for a dialogue within UQ to establish a coherent approach to ePortfolios. The workshop will feature international speakers (virtually) and national speakers (in person). Participation will be open to all UQ staff but places may be limited depending on demand. Brush off your skis for NZ trip

Great Court Race heats and finals coming up

The Great Court Race is a proud tradition at UQ and is now in its 24th year. The race covers a 636-metre lap of the Great Court at St Lucia and is based on the historic Cambridge University race. This year heats will take place on Wednesday, May 21 with Great Court Race finals on Wednesday, May 28. To write yourself into the UQ history books register online for heats no later than 5pm, Tuesday, May 20.

Rotary Fun Run is on May 25

Contribute to some great causes and get active with the 2008 Rotary Fun Run/Walk. The 5km or 10km shady course will take participants along the river and around the beautiful grounds of the University’s St Lucia campus.

Time to compete in the Maunsell Distance Classic

The Maunsell Distance Classic returns to the UQ Athletic Centre on May 30. The meet will feature the following categories: 5000 metres — Open Men; and 3000 metres — Open Women, Tertiary and Secondary School males and females.

Appreciate your good health

Every working day, five people are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and the average age of diagnosis is 30. Students, staff and family of the UQ community are invited to appreciate their good health by participating in the 2008 MS Brissy to the Bay Bike Ride on Sunday, June 2. Musculoskeletal specialist tutors in postgraduate physiotherapy clinic

The Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury clinic will commence the specialty postgraduate clinics on Monday, April 28. Newly-appointed Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapy, musculoskeletal specialist Miss Helen Fleming, will be clinical supervisor. Are you having trouble hearing

UQ researchers are seeking volunteers who have trouble hearing for a study on hearing rehabilitation decision making. Participants will receive a free hearing screening and discussion of their hearing needs with a qualified UQ audiologist. The audiologist will help participants decide what they can do to improve their hearing. Participation involves two meetings at the St Lucia campus, each meeting lasting about one and a half hours.
