Innovation & UQ: Identifying the Barriers and Opportunities

Staff are invited to an open forum by the NTEU’s Research Subcommittee to discuss innovation & UQ, and to have input into a submission to the Federal Government Review of Innovation in Australia. Journey of Healing dinner on next month

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, in partnership with Goorie Berrimpa Student Collective and the UQ Union, invite staff and students to attend the Journey of Healing (formerly known as Sorry Day) dinner on Friday, May 30 at the UQ Centre, St Lucia at 6pm. UQ’s Health Care Team Challenge is on again

The 2008 Health Care Team Challenge will be held on May 19 from 5– 7pm at the UQ Centre, St Lucia. The challenge is a public competition between inter-professional student teams with representatives from nine disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Student teams develop and present a management plan for a complex clinical case study, to a panel of expert judges and a live audience. Before the event, at 4 – 5pm, guest speaker Joanne Travaglia (University of New South Wales) will discuss the relationship between interprofessional learning and patient safety. Diversity awards and panel discussion

Staff and students are invited to attend the Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Awards evening on Wednesday, May 14. The event has been expanded to include the presentation of the first Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Alumni Award. The winner of the second annual Diversity Week Design Competition will also be announced. Register your attendance with Kristy Gan.

Queensland Brain Institute to hold special seminar this afternoon

Unigreen News, a newsletter for all UQ staff and students, highlights environmental initiatives including energy and water conservation, and recycling. The results of UQ switching off for Earth Hour are also included — an energy reduction of 14.2 percent. The newsletter is produced by Environmental Services, Property and Facilities Division. Indigenous writers sought for David Unaipon award

Budding and aspiring Indigenous writers are encouraged to enter the David Unaipon Award, one of Australia's leading Indigenous literary awards. As part of the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards, the David Unaipon Award offers unpublished Indigenous writers the chance to receive $15,000 in prize money. The winning manuscript will be published by the University of Queensland Press and the winner will be mentored. Entries close on Friday May 23.

Tools of Science lecture looks at Lippmann’s colour photography

One hundred years ago, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for a "method of reproducing colours photographically" to Gabriel Lippmann. Today, Lippmann is not famous, and his method is not the basis for colour photography as we commonly see it – so was 1908 a dud year for the Nobel committee? Lecturer in physics Margaret Wegener will argue for the significance of his work at the Parnell Building (#7) Lecture Room 222, St Lucia at 6pm on Tuesday May 6. Free talk tomorrow on printmaking at the University Art Museum

Russell Craig, a senior lecturer, fine art, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University will give a floor talk tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22 at 12pm at the UQ Art Museum, St Lucia on The print process: German Expressionist prints made between 1898 and 1927. Brush off your skis for NZ trip

World leader in horse breeding to give lecture tomorrow

Professor "Twink" Allen, a world-leading authority on equine reproduction will present his only Australian lecture entitled Recent Veterinary Advances and Successes in Horse Breeding on Tuesday, April 22 at Brisbane Customs House at 6pm for 6.30pm. The lecture is hosted by the School of Veterinary Science. Professor Allen is the Director of The Paul Mellon Laboratory of Equine Reproduction at Cheveley Park, Newmarket, UK and a former Jim Joel Professor of Equine Reproduction at the University of Cambridge. Get out your running shoes for Rotary Fun Run

Participate in this year’s Rotary Fun Run at UQ’s St Lucia campus on Sunday, May 25.The major beneficiary in 2008 is the Wesley Hospital’s Choices Program, which supports those affected by breast cancer. Working people needed for online survey

People currently employed are invited to participate in an online survey examining employees' attitudes toward work. Participation involves completing a short online survey, which takes between five and 10 minutes. This study aims to develop important new measures of work attitudes for use in further research into the roles that work plays in people's lives. Details: Gareth Simpson.

Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus.
