Graduate Student Week (GSW) this week (March 31–April 4)

Graduate Student Week is a full program of skills training workshops and information seminars for postgraduate students organised by the UQ Graduate School. The GSW program includes information and skills workshops by the UQ Library, Student Services and UniQuest specifically designed for PhD and MPhil candidates as well as sessions of general interest to other postgraduate students. Research Higher Degree candidates (PhD & MPhil), Masters coursework students, and Honours students are encouraged to participate in Graduate Student Week. Details: Graduate School website.

Detective fiction talk on menu for Friends of Fryer

On Thursday, April 3, the Friends of Fryer, the support group for UQ's Fryer Library, will hold their first event of the year at 5.30pm. Dr Toni Johnson-Woods of the Contemporary Studies Program, UQ Ipswich and Fryer Library Award Fellow for 2007, will give a lecture on Australian detective fiction writer Carter Brown, entitled: "Australia Doesn't Have to Rhyme with Failure: Carter Brown as Cultural Export." Ride to Work Day on Wednesday, April 2

Get involved in Bike Week 2008 with UQ SPORT organising Ride to Work Day for UQ staff and students on Wednesday, April 2. International television historian to present seminar

Associate Professor Jason Jacobs will present a seminar for the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies entitled: The Third Man and the BBC on Tuesday, April 8 at 2pm in the Social Sciences and Humanities Library conference room, Level 1, Duhig Building, St Lucia campus. Equity Office review submissions sought

Staff members are invited to make a submission to the review of the Equity Office, which will be conducted during May 27–28. Bookings for staff influenza (flu) vaccinations clinics available from April 3

Bookings can be made online for clinics at St Lucia, the Medical School, the Dental School and the JKMRC site at Indooroopilly. Arrangements for flu vaccinations at Princess Alexandra Hospital can be made by phone or email. Bookings are available for clinics until May 23 at St Lucia. Details: the staff flu program website. This site has a consent form which you should print out and bring to your appointment. Please read the information links on flu vaccination before your appointment, especially if you have not had the vaccine previously.

Competition closed

John Stanley from the School of Human Movement Studies has won a dinner for two to the value of $150 at Brent's Restaurant, Toowong by completing the OH&S online induction. The competition officially closed on Friday, March 28 and the winner of the major prize of a holiday for two to Hamilton Island will be announced next week.

Russian art installation opens

AES+F: Last Riot, a three-screen video installation by four Russian artists, together known as AES+F Group, has opened at the UQ Art Museum, St Lucia. Last Riot was shown at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 as part of the official Russian Pavilion. The exhibition continues until May 11. Details: artmuseum@uq.edu.au or phone ext. 53046.

Talking art this Friday

The UQ Art Museum Director Nick Mitzevich will present a regular casual lunchtime talk on the museum’s collection on Friday, April 4 at 12 noon at the Mayne Centre, St Lucia. The tour starts at UQAM front desk.

talking PHOTOGRAPHY on Sunday

A free 2008 Queensland Festival of Photography event — talking PHOTOGRAPHY — will be held on Sunday, April 6 from 12.30pm to 5pm with two panel discussions: Performing for the lens: the active subject in contemporary photography; and First Witness: The value of the archive for photo-media artists. Have your say in Open Forum

An independent collaborative think-tank, Open Forum, has launched an online equivalent to the Federal Government’s Australia 2020 Summit, inviting students and staff from UQ to log on and have their say about Australia’s future. The discussion threads will be made available to participants in the official summit, to inform their thinking and the direction of the policy development process. Upgrade your skills in records management, office administration

The UQ Secretaries’ and Office Professionals’ Association (UQSOPA) and TEDI are running two courses next month — the first, Records Management Introduction on Friday, April 4 at 9–11am in the Ipswich Library Seminar Room, Ipswich Campus. For the first time, the UQSOPA will also offer a Basic Office Administration Skills course aimed at levels lower than HEW 5. Mark diaries for Office Professionals Day in May

UQSOPA, which was formed 30 years ago, runs workshops for personal assistants and office professionals, holds networking events and facilitates the General Staff Self Development Prize and Miracle Workers Awards. The association currently has 81 members. UQSOPA invites staff to take part in Office Professionals Day on Friday, May 2. Parenting expert will be guest speaker

UQSOPA is organising a breakfast at Darwin’s Café, St Lucia, on Wednesday, April 2, with Professor Matt Sanders, 2007 Queenslander of the Year, founder of the Triple P-Positive Parenting Program, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre. UQ SPORT clinics offer a range of services

The newly established Inter-Professional Clinics at UQ SPORT offer a range of classes and programs to facilitate participation in exercise by people at risk of developing chronic disease and those diagnosed with a disease or problem that limits physical activity. Accredited exercise physiologists work closely with clients to achieve health and fitness goals in group, or individual sessions. The Inter-Professional Clinics accept referrals from General Practitioners as well as self-referring clients, and some services may attract health care rebates. Autumn School’s Out program to run April 7 to 11.

Your child will be spoilt for choice these holidays at the UQKids School’s Out Autumn program. There are three sport and recreation clinic options including UQKids Multisport Clinic for learning about a diverse range of sport and recreational activities, the Morning Sport Specific Skill Development Clinics for enhancing skills in a specific sports, and RAP, an activity based program for 6 to 12 year-olds. Develop strength with Pilates program

Now that UniFIT subsidies are through, try Pilates at least once a week. Improve your posture and gym workout and increase your flexibility and abdominal strength. Office workers needed for survey

Office workers are invited to participate in an online survey examining employees’ responses to environmental issues in organisations. Participation involves completing an online survey and viewing an online video. The study aims to provide insights and enable improvements in organisational responses to environmental issues. Participants needed for chronic back pain study

Volunteers with a history of low back pain greater than three months are invited to participate in a study investigating motor control of the low back and pelvis. Participants will be required to attend one, two-hour session at the CCRE Spine (UQ) St Lucia campus. The tests involve four, simple, pain-free and non-invasive measures including the use of ultrasound and EMG. Details: Ryan Stafford or phone ext. 67751.

Balance and falls prevention study: participants needed

The Division of Physiotherapy invites volunteers aged 40 and over to participate in a clinical intervention trial to improve balance and prevent falls in adults as they age. The study comprises an initial and post-program assessment involving balance and strength tests, both of 1.5 hrs duration (free), and 10, weekly one-hour small group exercise classes ($10 per session) at St Lucia campus. Free chronic disease self-management program begins next week

The Division of Physiotherapy also needs participants for its chronic disease self-management programs. Courses run once a week for six weeks on Tuesday mornings. The first course starts on Tuesday, April 8 and is free. Other courses will be run regularly throughout the year. Details: Megan Fisher or phone 54587.

Volunteers needed for exercise effects test

Participants are needed to help in a study investigating the effect of exercise on the blood sugar response to food consumed after exercise. Volunteers will receive a free fitness test (VO2max) & $50. Details: Julian Pepper phone 0410 573 416.
