Multifaith – multicultural concert this week
Many Voices, One Song — a multifaith–multicultural concert to celebrate the beginning of the academic year — will be held in the Great Court, St Lucia on Thursday, February 21, from 11am to 1pm. A free BBQ (Halal meat and vegetarian) will be available. All students and staff are welcome.

The University has become one of the first Australian universities to draw its electricity from renewable energy sources.
Attend staff briefings on INSIGHT Project
All staff members are invited to the first round of campus briefings for the UQ INSIGHT market research and strategic planning project, which will commence next week (the week beginning Monday, February 25). The briefings will give project updates and share current information. Register online.
Staff invited to brand development workshops
Two staff brand development workshops also have been scheduled for interested staff. These workshops will help the University to identify the brand values most critical to the needs of work areas and to develop compelling propositions for the relevant market segments. Service to honour 89 donors
Make a diary note to attend the annual School of Biomedical Sciences’ annual multi–faith Thanksgiving Service on May 6, which this year honours the largest number of donors in the service’s history. It also coincides with 40 years of Chaplaincy at UQ.
Institute of Modern Languages enrolments close February 22

Intercampus bus timetable updated for first semester
The intercampus bus schedule for semester one has been published. The service starts today, February 18. Timetables are available from the buses webpage.
Staff influenza (flu) vaccinations clinics start March 18.
Flu vaccinations bookings for clinics at St Lucia, the Medical School, the Dental School and the JKMRC can be made online. Arrangements for flu vaccinations at Princess Alexandra Hospital can be made by phone or email. Bookings are available for clinics from March 18 to May 23 at St Lucia. Details: visit the Staff Flu Program website . The site has a consent form that you should print out and bring to your appointment. Business professor explains how to cope
The UQSOPA (University of Queensland Secretaries’ and Office Professionals’ Association) invites staff to enjoy lunch with UQ’s Business School’s Professor Victor Callan. Play with the UQ BIG BAND in 2008
The UQ BIG BAND seeks new members for 2008. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday night from 7pm–9pm in the Nickson Room (Room 434) at the School of Music, Zelman Cowen Building, St Lucia, starting February 27. You'll need to be able to read music, be proficient on an instrument and prepared to perform at concerts during semester. See the UQ BIG BAND website for details. The TC Beirne School of Law is one of the leading research law schools in Australia. Submit material to political science and social issues journal
Staff and postgraduate students are invited to submit articles and discussion pieces to Dialogue e-journal, a fully refereed, peer reviewed academic e-journal, registered with DEST, and which is a student-based publication from the School of Political Science and International Studies. Contributions about politics, international relations, policy studies, philosophy, law, economics, sociology, and cultural studies are welcome. Articles should be approximately 5000 words and discussion pieces around 2000 words. Submit contributions in electronic formal to Shannon Brincat, ext. 52256.
Win the jackpot at quiz night
The Staff Club's popular monthly quiz night, now entering its eighth year, resumes on Wednesday, February 27, at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Teams of up to six players can undertake three general knowledge rounds, an audio round, a paper and pen task, and answer individual progressive clue questions. Case study looks at difficult task of changing organisational culture
The UQ Business School is organising a research seminar, Not so damned easy, with Professor Mats Alvesson on Friday, February 22 at 1pm–3pm at room 105, Colin Clark Building (Building #39), St Lucia. Learn to row starts February 26
Get fit and have fun on the Brisbane River with the UQ SPORT Learn 2 Row Level 1 course, where adult beginners are introduced to sweep oar rowing in a coxed eight boat. Each course runs for six weeks with two sessions per week. For details visit the UQ Boat Club website or call ext. 56049.
Parents needed for School of Psychology research
People with at least one child aged between two–10 years are sought for research to develop a new DVD-based measure of parenting skills. The measure will help professionals evaluate the needs of parents in parent training programs and the treatment of child behaviour problems. Fathers are encouraged to participate. Participation will involve viewing a series of DVD clips of common child behaviours and responding to questions related to caring for children. Details: Elizabeth Puhakka or phone ext. 67326.
Help offered for problem gamblers
UQ School of Psychology researchers are offering problem gamblers a free trial of self-help treatment. The treatment has been used in face-to-face therapy in a previous trial and the new trial will assess whether the treatment works equally well when delivered in a self-help format. The trial is funded by a Responsible Gambling grant from the Queensland Department of Treasury, and is free to eligible people. Cholesterol trial volunteers wanted
Participants are sought for a series of international clinical trials investigating the effect of niacin on cholesterol levels in participants with high levels of LDL cholesterol. Niacin is reputed to have highly favourable effects on lowering LDL or "bad" cholesterol. Additionally, the effect of niacin and hot flushing will also be investigated in participants with high LDL cholesterol. Details: email Linda Rogers or call 3876 5688 and ask for Linda or Stacey.
High cholesterol survey participants wanted
Volunteers with high blood cholesterol are needed for a series of surveys investigating how effectively people are treated for this condition. Additionally, the survey aims to give up-to-date and reliable information about the prevalence of high cholesterol conditions. The researchers wish to undertake a brief survey of volunteers’ general health and drug prescription regimes. Details: email Stacey Goodwin or call 3876 5688 and ask for Stacey or Kyli.
Volunteers with irritable bowel syndrome wanted
Participants are required for a study investigating the effect of a new type of cow’s milk on volunteers with irritable bowel syndrome and asthma and/or eczema and/or hayfever. Volunteers meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria will be randomised to a new type of cow’s milk group and a control group drinking normal milk for two weeks with a two-week washout period. Subjects will be required to follow a casein and gluten-free wash out diet for three weeks before the trial. Details: email Antonio Ferreira-Jardim or call 3876 5688 and ask for Antonio.
High blood pressure participants wanted
Volunteers are sought for a study investigating the effectiveness of combination therapy in people who have high blood pressure. If you, or someone you know, is being treated for high blood pressure, the researchers are seeking volunteers to enrol in this research for a year. All travel and medical costs will be reimbursed.
