This week’s Update will be the final UQ Update for 2007. The newsletter will resume weekly publication from Monday, January 21, 2008. Students examine their OPtions

Staff members with prospective tertiary students in their families are reminded that the University’s OPtions Evening will be held at the St Lucia campus tomorrow, Tuesday, December 18. School-leavers will have the chance to speak face-to-face with experts from all of the University's faculties from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at the UQ Centre, Union Road, St Lucia. Details

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hay, AC, will attend his final graduation ceremony in his current role, at 6pm today.

Medical honours for UQ trio

Professors John Hancock and Robert Parton, both from UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and Dr David Copland from the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences have been recognised in the inaugural National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Awards.

UQ and the University of Melbourne have launched the Australian Health Workforce Institute (AHWI) to address Australia's drastic shortage of health workers.

Call for papers for Rhizomes IV conference

The School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies invites papers by January 10, 2008, for the School's fourth annual postgraduate conference, Rhizomes IV for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The conference will enable scholars in the humanities and social sciences to engage on the theme "Power Violence Language". Physio clinic extends hours for Summer Semester

The Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury Physiotherapy clinic will extend its hours of operation from January 7 to February 29, 2008. More appointment times will be available during the lunch hours and weekday afternoons. The clinic will remain open until December 21 and reopen on January 3. To schedule an appointment call the reception at ext. 52232.

Submit for 2008 Carrick Institute schemes

The internal submission and review process for staff intending to submit proposals to the 2008 Carrick Institute Fellowship or Grants schemes are now available. Internal nomination dates for each of the schemes are as follows:

Each nomination should be made by email to m.card@uq.edu.au in the Office of the DVC (Academic) and be accompanied by a draft proposal as per the Carrick scheme's guidelines. Full internal submission process dates, and links to each scheme's guidelines can be found on the Teaching and Learning website.

Induction courses for new Ipswich staff

All academic and general staff who will be new to the Ipswich campus in 2008 are encouraged to register for the Induction for Staff new to Ipswich Campus on February 21, 2008. Academic staff are also encouraged to register for the Induction for Academics new to Ipswich, to be held on the same day. (Please note that online registration will not be available until early 2008). The courses will run on Thursday, February 21. Intercampus bus timetable revised for 2007-2008 holidays

The intercampus bus summer schedule will operate until Friday, December 21, 2007, and from Monday, January 14, 2008 to Friday, February 15, 2008. Timetables are available from the buses webpage.

Are you graduating in 2007?

Staff and students who are graduating this year are encouraged to help the University by taking a few minutes to fill out the Australian Graduate Survey. The survey allows you to report on your experience at UQ, and what you have been doing since you graduated. The AGS is a national survey conducted each year by all Australian universities. Arts offers HECS-HELP scholarship

The Faculty of Arts is offering Commonwealth-supported postgraduate coursework scholarships (HECS-HELP) each semester to full-time general staff employed in a continuing appointment/s within the University for at least two years. Applicants must gain admission to a postgraduate coursework program and commence study in 2008. Submit applications for Semester 1, 2008 to Sherrie Hoang by January 30, 2008. EPSA offers postgraduate scholarships for general staff

The Faculty of EPSA offers Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff members (full-time for at least two years) who gain admission to postgraduate coursework programs within the Faculty.
