New canvases brighten Gatton centre

Shelton Hall at UQ Gatton, which has been refurbished as a conference centre, has enlisted artists aged nine to 13 to paint 17 canvases. The work will be catalogued by the University, and remain on permanent display in Shelton Hall. A celebration for the completion of the commission will be held at the Toowoomba Art Society on December 1. The young artists will each be rewarded with a UQ satchel when the presentation of the Shelton Artworks Collection is made to Simon Scott, Head of Halls, UQ Gatton.

German artist Leni Hoffmann uses plasticine for artwork on University Drive

“Encore” by Matthys Gerber/Leni Hoffmann opens on Friday, November 30 at 6pm at the UQ Art Museum, St Lucia. Sam Watson Snr will launch the exhibition catalogue TURRBAL-JAGERA: The University of Queensland Art Projects 2006. Following the launch, Professor Leni Hoffmann will give a brief artist’s talk about her new work. Leni Hoffmann’s plasticine artwork will be located on University Drive near the UQ Art Museum. Australian artist Matthys Gerber’s painted power pole is adjacent to the entry to the undercover car park on Sir Fred Schonell Drive. Intercampus bus timetable revised for 2007-2008 vacation period

Visiting food policy expert gives public lecture

Professor Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy from the City University, London is visiting UQ this week to give keynote lectures at the Agri-food XIV and Australian Public Health Nutrition Academic Collaboration conferences. As part of the Agri-food conference he is giving a free public lecture: Cashing in on Consumers' Supermarket Power, Consumer Choice and the Challenges of the Future at the Queensland College of Art Central Lecture Theatre and Dell Gallery Building (S05), South Bank on Tuesday, November 27 from 5pm to 6.30pm. Have your say before November 30: eLearning staff development survey

This survey is open to all (academic and general) UQ staff associated with teaching and/or eLearning. TEDI wishes to hear from people who have participated in eLearning staff development, or who either teach or have an interest or role associated with eLearning and/or Blackboard. The survey, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, will collect information on the perceptions of UQ staff on the impact of TEDI eLearning staff development and ways to improve the development programs. Professor Peter Spearritt speaks at Friends of Fryer Christmas event

The former Executive Director of the Brisbane Institute and currently Professor of History at UQ, Professor Peter Spearritt, will be guest speaker at The Friends of Fryer Christmas Party. His talk is entitled: Confessions of a Book Collector Who Threw It All In for Travel Ephemera. Staff and students invited to Dayboro Vet Surgery open day

The UQ Dayboro Vet Surgery is having an Open Day on Saturday, December 1 from 11am - 2.30pm to celebrate its 20th anniversary. There will be displays and activities including a reptile show, face painting, barnyard babies, information stalls, clinic tours, sausage sizzle, and colouring competition. JCU leader speaks at Senior Women Seminar Series

The Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University, Professor Sandra Harding, will discuss The troublesome concept of merit at the Senior Women Seminar Series on Wednesday, November 28 in the Innes Room, Student Union Complex, St Lucia campus. The series is a bi-annual event coordinated by The Equity Office in collaboration with the UQ Women Professors’ Network. It aims to provide a forum to explore issues regarding gender equity in higher education from a variety of perspectives. Students and staff at the St Lucia campus are invited to participate in an online questionnaire survey of travel choices following the opening of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in December, 2006. Applications closing soon for BEL postgraduate coursework scholarships

The BEL Faculty is offering Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff employed in full-time continuing appointments for at least two years. Applicants must apply separately for admission to one of the Faculty's postgraduate coursework programs and provide evidence they have been admitted to a relevant program. Physiotherapy clinic open in summer semester

Does playing too much backyard cricket leave your shoulder feeling sore? Are endless hours correcting exams or computer work creating a sore neck? The Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury clinic of the Division of Physiotherapy will provide services during summer. The clinic, at the St Lucia campus, offers comprehensive assessments and management of aches and pains. It is open daily during normal business hours. Do you have carpal tunnel syndrome?

The Division of Physiotherapy at UQ is developing a novel treatment for the non-surgical management of carpal tunnel syndrome. We are looking for volunteers who have a medical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, have not had physiotherapy or occupational therapy in the past 3 months and who have not had treatment for neck pain in the past year. Volunteers are required for a single one-hour treatment session in the Therapies Building, St Lucia campus. Details: Lieszel Plumbe.

Would you like to be more effective in supporting your child at home?

Staff are invited to take part in a free occupational therapy coaching intervention that aims to improve children’s skills through coaching parents in the particular learning needs of their children (aged five-12). Areas addressed in this study include managing family routines such as getting ready for school; completing homework; specific skill problems such as dressing, cutlery use, or playing with friends; or more general issues such as physical, thinking or social skills. Participants sought for bone and muscle health study

Healthy control volunteers aged seven to 17 years are required to help researchers using new technology, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), to investigate the development of, and interaction between, muscle and bone in young individuals with Cystic Fibrosis compared to healthy controls. Participants will be required to attend one three-hour session at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Herston. Tests will be performed to assess bone and muscle function.
