The University has welcomed the signing of a $50 million funding agreement from the Queensland Government for the University’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB). UQ celebrates Moreton Bay

Medal to mining industry research leader

Premier Anna Bligh has presented the inaugural Queensland Resources Council (QRC) medal to Professor Don McKee, retiring Director of the University’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI). Professor McKee has been the SMI Director since its inception in 2001. He was the driving force behind the establishment in 1986 of JKTech, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre’s commercial division, which has become a template for the technology transfer industry.

Staff and students invited to Dayboro Vet Surgery open day

The UQ Dayboro Vet Surgery is having an Open Day on Saturday, December 1 from 11am - 2.30pm to celebrate its 20th anniversary. There will be displays and activities including a reptile show, face painting, barnyard babies, information stalls, clinic tours, sausage sizzle, and colouring competition. The UQ Dayboro Vet Surgery is located at 125 McKenzie St, Dayboro and can be contacted on 3425 1181.

Applications open for Promoting Women Fellowships 2008

Academic women at Levels B–D (and Research staff at equivalent levels) who have been employed at UQ for at least three years, are invited to apply for these fellowships. Women who have had career interruptions or other impediments due to equity related circumstances will be given additional consideration. The funding available to each Fellow will be to a maximum amount of $15,000 (allocated by the University Staff Development Committee). Full details about eligibility for a Promoting Women Fellowship, guidelines, application form and Head’s supporting statement form are available online. Lodge applications by Monday, November 26.

Staff and students who are graduating this year are encouraged to help the University by taking a few minutes to fill out the Australian Graduate Survey. The survey allows you to report on your experience at UQ, and what you have been doing since you graduated. The AGS is a national survey conducted each year by all Australian universities. JCU leader speaks at Senior Women Seminar Series

The Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University, Professor Sandra Harding, will discuss The troublesome concept of merit at the Senior Women Seminar Series on Wednesday, November 28 in the Innes Room, Student Union Complex, St Lucia campus. The series is a bi-annual event coordinated by The Equity Office in collaboration with the UQ Women Professors’ Network. It aims to provide a forum to explore issues regarding gender equity in higher education from a variety of perspectives. ConCordUQ launch workshop

A workshop on Conflict Sensitive Business Practice in the Resources Sector will take place on Wednesday, November 28 at Christie Corporate Conferencing in Brisbane City. Students and staff at the St Lucia campus are invited to participate in an online questionnaire survey of travel choices following the opening of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in December, 2006. Applications closing soon for BEL postgraduate coursework scholarships

The BEL Faculty is offering Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff employed in full-time continuing appointments for at least two years. Applicants must apply separately for admission to one of the Faculty's postgraduate coursework programs and provide evidence they have been admitted to a relevant program. EPSA offers postgraduate scholarships for general staff

The Faculty of EPSA also offers Commonwealth-supported postgraduate scholarships to general staff members (full-time for at least two years) who gain admission to postgraduate coursework programs within the Faculty. Accountability examined in international criminal law seminar

The TC Beirne School of Law is holding a research seminar: A New System of International Criminal Accountability: The Relationship between National, Internationalised and International Criminal Mechanisms in the Era of the ICC. It will be on November 30 from 12-1pm at the Sir Samuel Griffith Room, 1-W341, Forgan Smith Building, St Lucia campus. The presenter is Ms Kate Gibson, a lawyer at the Appeals Chamber of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, in The Hague. She has previously worked as a Defence Lawyer for a former Rwandan General accused of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, in Tanzania.
